CHERRY MX BLUE SWITCHES:
as someone who grew up in the 80s with my IBM PC XT compatible with a really nice mechanical keyboard (no, not the model M... i had a leading edge model d and i just discovered that they sport really nice alps blue complicated switches), i've been looking for a long time for a modern experience that replicated that feel.
my first attempt lead me to the highly revered model M (unicomp make) thinking that that was what i was used to. geez, i guess i never used buckling spring before because the endura is RIDICULOUSLY STIFF to my sensibilities and fingers. and almost as bad was the the "twang" sound that was very subtle but nonetheless very present on every key press.
digression that will lead back to model M:
also, if you look at diagrams of the cherry mx blues, there's an alarming detail that shows that after you actuate the switch, the mechanism slides a bit so that it takes a while to bounce up back to ready position to be actuated again. this would make "double taps" in games very difficult/annoying because you have to basically let the key bounce all the way up before you can hit it again.
while the diagram of the cherry mx switch is indeed accurate, i can attest that there will be no problems with me double tapping in games. the nice thing about the cherry mx switch is that you feel it actuate and you can also feel it "de-actuate" so you know by feel when the switch is ready... AND, the distance isn't very far.
but i have GREAT experience in a mechanism that is very bad for double tapping - BUCKLING SPRINGS! the buckling springs on the endura pro would actuate but then there is a VERY LONG travel distance before it "de-actuates". and while you can feel when it does de-actuate, it happens so far beyond where you expect it, that it really doesn't help.
that is what i feared by getting the blues. i had never personally tried the blues in person and i really agonized between getting the blues or the browns.
i'm happy to report that the blues are exactly what i wanted and hoped for. i wanted a keyboard that was the ultimate experience for typing but also suitable for games and the blues are just that.
it is very nice and clicky and while cherry mx blues have no coordination with the alps blue switches from my youth, it turns out that they do feel similar. the stiffness of the keys is also similar and not at all the impervious resistance of buckling springs. but make no mistake, they are very clicky and they can be quite noisy. this can be issue for you depending on your environment so take it into consideration. but for me, i love the sound.
i do wish that the resistance was a bit looser than it is but having used laptop style chiclet logitech keys for a while, i suspect it's just a matter of getting my fingers accustomed. but again, fear not, this is not at all comparable to the resistance on model M buckling springs.
RAPID-I KEYBOARD
first thing you want to do is go to the cooler master website and download and install the latest firmware. in previous versions, there was an issue with the keyboard not being recognized on resets or reboots and needing the cord to be disconnected and connected again to get recognition. this has been solved with the latest firmware.
as for the keyboard itself, it is a super deluxe experience.
there is a very nice "soft touch" coating on all the keys and the case and it is really velvety and heavenly. for a keyboard, it's expensive but you can definitely feel the quality. elegant, compact and SOLID.
the LEDs illuminate the keys pleasingly in dark environments and all the modes and recording features are well thought out and useful.
anyway, just a really really nice keyboard and if you are concerned about a premium typing experience without sacrificing gaming, for me at least, the blues switches are a great way to go (if you don't mind the noise).
So for those of us enthusiastic about keyboards, widely considered the holy grail is the IBM buckling spring. Well, those are rare keyboards, and not exactly easy nor cheap to find. Most of the new mechanical keyboards on the market right now use some form of Cherry Switches - Red, Blue, Black, Brown, White etc- and these switches are generally very good for nearly all mechanical keyboards.
I own 3 mechanical keyboards, including this keyboard; the other two are Cherry MX Blue switches. I've also had an extensive experience with a friend's Razer with MX Black switches (No MX Browns, sorry). Of all of them, I love this keyboard the best, especially because of the Cherry MX Green. But let's talk about some points
POINTS!
First on the list is the form factor - the keyboard is a modified 10-key design, missing dedicated/separate arrow keys cluster & home/end page up/down insert/delete cluster. Instead, these keys are integrated into the numpad and are accessible via a function key that toggles the function of the 10 key cluster. There are a number of function keys on the top row, including a switch to toggle 6 key or ~n key rollover, LED backlight controls, Media keys and a Windows button lock. Standard good things in the enter, shift, caps lock and toggle keys - no weird under-sized keys.
Second good thing is the LED back-lighting. Using the function keys you can toggle the various modes (Keys at an adjustable brightness, a pulsing brightness mode, and various highlighting modes, where the backlight affects only certain keys), which is really handy.
The backlight also illuminates the arrow keys or the numpad numbers, depending on which mode is active - this is very handy, especially when only the WASD keys are illuminated.
Third is the build quality. The LEDs are not SUPER BRIGHT and blinding - thank goodness! The overall fit and finish of the keyboard is excellent, and while a little bit heavy for most keyboards, it lends itself to making the keyboard that much more solid. The underside oft the keyboard is slotted so that you can run the detachable cable either out the front, left or right side of the keyboard. There are also little risers you can pop out, and they have a solid click and nice rubber feet. I really appreciate the compromise of size and needed key placement. A full size keyboard on my desk is simply too big, it puts my mouse way out in Kansas (rather uncomfortable reaching way out there), while my smaller keyboard just doesn't get any use because its missing the numpad - if you can adjust to the switching functionality of the 10 keys, this keyboard shines immensely.
And the reason I bought this keyboard: CHERRY MX GREEN SWITCHES!!!!!!!!!
In my experience with various mechanical keyboard switches, laptop scissor switches and nasty rubber domes, I will always want my MX Green over any others. The click and feel is similar to MX Blue, but far meatier and heavy. If I can't get buckling springs, and especially don't want to shell out for Topre or a Filco, then I'll definitely buy one of these bad boys. In fact, I think I'd prefer this product from Coolermaster; For a pretty dang cheap price, I get my favorite Cherry switches (which are rather uncommon btw), AWESOME LED backlighting, my favorite form factor and a high quality product. Why wouldn't I buy this?
Conclusion: Amazing keyboard, nice form and build quality, good price and a quality product.

I opted for the cherry mx red switches, simply because it was cheaper at the time (I was initially leaning toward the brown switches), but I do not regret my purchase. Typing on this thing feels really good, and gaming on this thing is absolutely perfect. I think I made the right choice in the end, since the keys on this model feel very easy to press, and gaming on keys with a harder resistance may have made my fingers tired after a while.
The design of this keyboard is also very nice. I absolutely LOVE the red backplate behind the keys. It's a very nice touch, quite subtle, but very pleasing to the eye. The backlighting is also very nice, but I would have liked a few more modes (a way to customize which keys are lit and which ones aren't would have been nice - I've seen this feature on some competitor models).
I do have a couple of small complaints. I would have liked a longer cord. It makes pulling my computer away from the wall a hassle, since I need to unplug the keyboard every time since the wire is short. Thankfully, the wire is replaceable so I may end up changing it for a longer one if it bothers me enough. One other minor thing is that I would have preferred that the Windows key have a different texture, or some type of tactile indicator that I'm pressing that key instead of the ALT or CTRL keys, since they are easy to mix up. Thankfully, you are able to disable this key entirely, so this is a very minor complaint.
I know Cooler Master is not typically known for their keyboards, but they've knocked it out of the park on this one! Personally I think this is the best compact mechanical keyboard on the market right now, simply because of its design, and the fact that they did not need to sacrifice the num pad in order to keep its compact size. Absolutely love it.
