My previous experience was rebuilding Gateway computers, and then built an Amazon i7-860 intel win7 HTPC computer in 2010. The i7-860 computer was all purchased here on Amazon and this one too. I started buying the parts 6-7 months ago. I put all the parts on the computer several months ago and thought a friend of mine had a deal on win10. Well that didn't happen. Several weeks ago I ordered the win 10pro disc from Amazon and the entire system booted and flew out the gate. The only glitch I encountered was remedied by removing an older DVD drive, older cables(dummy!), some mobo spacers to fix an under or oversized stand-off issue, and more RAM. Pick one for the solution, because it runs perfect now. Was sometimes not restarting with a black screen, which I chalked up to poor cables or static buildup. Sometimes I run into a problem because, like my parents, they were hoarders, and I keep old stuff, when in fact, I should toss it. You don't spend $1500 on quality parts and then try to save $1 by employing ancient parts. The Belkin 2.0 USB was the only oldie that survived and may go later.
I really would have liked to purchase an Intel board, but they do not make Extreme mobos anymore, only processors. My other Intel board has Bluetooth and an IR unit that is wonderful. That said, this Gigabyte board is great. The bios are spectacular. This is the first time I have seen UEFi bios and they are very cool looking and user friendly. Makes my i7-860 bios look like Fischer Price bios. Many tweaks to be had. Want to overclock, just set the dbl. click on what ever percent you want the machine to run. Simple. Motherboard has plenty of USB3.0s and 2.0s. I also miss not having an eSata attachment like my old i7-860 board. I'm sure if I spent another one hundred on this mobo, I might have picked all those extras I like.
The computer did not have the Nvdia video when I loaded the win10. Gigabyte board comes with onboard sound and video(VGA,HDMI,DVI). This next part blew me away. I got the computer up and running on my Samsung HDTV and my 5k Canon photos were popping on the screen brightly. WOW, the onboard video surpassed everything I've ever seen from onboard usual dullness. The next test was even more wowwing. My i7-860 Intel computer plays the new Tomb Raider game great on normal to high, forget ultimate, won't do it. I loaded up TR on Steam to try out the Intel Graphics. I was not hoping for much. The onboard Intel Graphics ran TR on normal and I was needless to say, shocked. Once I connected the GTX960 Windforce(had to remove the the plate for the upper HD drive bays for it to fit. A two fan GTX960 would not require this maneuver) TR ran on ultimate with ease.
I'm only into the first month of running and I love it. I am looking forward to testing out some usb3.0 transfer speeds now that I have a 3.0 computer and have always had some WD 3.0 2tb Passport drives, a Sabrent usb3.0 HD portable case, and Sata III drives that all may function better in the new environment.
I read this in another review when I was researching things months ago and noticed that the motherboard does not fit perfectly into the Coolermaster Scout 2 case. This did not deter me from purchasing. What that means, the right edge of the board that gets the most downward pressure from RAM, power cabling, and Satas, is unsupported from the bottom edge of the board. The standoffs do not go to the bottom right edge of the motherboard for underneath support. Not sure if that is a Scout 2 problem or a Giga problem. This is the only semi negative I can even remotely come up with. Not a biggy.
The board comes with the latest bios F8. All the drivers on the disc may be older versions. So I went directly to the website and downloaded all the new windows 10 drivers for the motherboard

The board comes with the latest bios F8. All the drivers on the disc may be older versions. So I went directly to the website and downloaded all the new windows 10 drivers for the motherboard
Interestingly though, my Norton Internet Security saw this as a new machine and I had to log into my account and enable this one even though it was already enabled under the same name with the old board as I was using the same boot drive.
I like the layout and everything works good and I have had several Gigabyte boards in the past that never missed a beat until I stopped using them simply because I was upgrading to newer technology. The sound is very good and like that it has two PS/2 style connections for both the keyboard and mouse as sometimes when you have problems with a system your keyboard/mouse might not be working if they're USB as they drivers for them may not have been loaded yet. That's not an issue with this board as they're loaded from the BIOS at boot and the mouse is working in the BIOS. I'm expecting that this should give me a number of year's service until my next major upgrade as I am skipping 1151 since it doesn't offer enough added punch to warrant needing to get a new board, processor, and memory. What I have now works well without any noticeable delays and is very stable which counts a lot with me.
I did notice the heatsink on the long end would rock a bit, but it is solidly connected and it is moving only because its mounted by screw pins with suspension springs which give it a bit of wiggle. I have zero issues with heat so I know it is doing its job.
Even though this is listed as an ATX board, a couple of the mounting holes were not in the standard place and I had to move a couple of the stays to accommodate it, but its a sturdy PCB so its in there solid and isn't bending while I am plugging in power, cpu, gpu, or memory.
