The hardware is good, but the software could use s little more common sense.

The hardware is good, but the software could use s little more common sense.
I like the IR camera, but the iPhone app is designed for technologically challenged people. It only lets you change the color style of the image. That's it. I want to have more controls. I want to be able to set a certain temperature as the default background temp and prevent the software from constantly adjusting it, the way a regular camera adjusts brightness automatically.I went outside today in freezing 32 F weather and everything on the screen was orange. You can't even tell if there's heat anywhere because the software makes it look like everything is hot, when it's actually freezing.I've noticed this with a lot of iPhone devices and accessories. For some reason the apps for devices are always designed for dumb people. Designed for the "average" iPhone user. So it's not just this company.

This device is amazing, and I believe there is no *need* to wait for the second generation (which comes out around Summer 2015). Here's why:

-If you have an iPhone 5 or 5s (NOT 5c), this camera fits the phone perfectly and allows you to leave the case on the phone all day long if you like. The 2nd generation is a dongle that fits into the bottom of the phone at the lightning connector. This is GREAT if you do no have an iPhone 5/5s, but for those who do the dongle may be more inconvenient, being more prone to falling off the phone or getting damaged if the end of the phone hits something. The second generation will not be as streamlined as this one. The second gen is "1/3 of the weight," but I can tell you this case is already very light.

-Resolution: the second generation will have about 4X the resolution. This is essential if you want to see far distances with the camera, or need to see extremely fine detail up close. For most users, this is not the case, and the resolution of the 1st generation will work just fine.

-Price: Although the 2nd gen price has not been confirmed, initial estimates are predicting $299 (hopeful) - $350 (possible). If you have an iPhone 5/5s and do not need to see far distances or very tiny detail (as discussed above), save yourself $50-$100 and opt for this model. If Flir drops the price of this model when the 2nd gen is released, you could save even more.

Some points about this model:

Pros:
-Excellent build construction: light, solid, quality materials
-Long battery life
-Charging via micro USB charges both the Flir and your iPhone 5/5s (after Flir finishes charging)

Cons:
-Very frequent recalibration prompts appear (merely involves holding a switch for 1-2 seconds). Note that you can continue using the camera without constantly recalibrating, but you may sacrifice some accuracy. This is not an issue when you are checking for thermal leaks or hot spots where you just want to find where there is a temperature difference.
-Size - Flir does double the thickness of the iPhone 5. Given the functionality of the device, I do not consider this to be a major problem (just think how fat phones were only a few years ago!)

I've always thought that FLIR devices were highly over priced, but its a limited, specialized kind of market so until recently there just wasn't that much interest outside of professions. The sellers are improving on marketing and the user base is expanding some which, I think, led to the need for a lower cost unit. I think they will come down more in the future hopefully!

This will be an imperfect review as I haven't gotten a lot of usage time with it yet, but I'll update later down the line.
First, shipping and packaging was impressive. The actual advertising package box was wrapped with air bubble wrap and then packed in a bigger box. The actual unit box is fancy! Interesting curve shape with a magnetic flip cover, all very iPhone-esque quality :). When you remove the unit from the box don't forget to pull the guts out of the box since additional cables and stuff are hidden underneath!

The software was a quick download from apple and setup was a snap, instructions are straight forward. There are a lot of color/shading options but I keep finding myself using the default. Within ten minutes of playing with it in the house I had already found two areas of attic space along my NW wall, which has all bay windows, that appear to have no insulation in about 4'x2' segments! you could clearly see the blaring heat pushing through the sheetrock in both places compared to the rest of the ceiling that was closer to room temp. I'll have to get up there and check closer later.

The unit seems to be well constructed and appears durable, but I'm going to buy a small aluminum case for it to protect my investment. I'll update as I find more interesting things!

The set up was simple and the camera worked as advertised. Again, as advertised the resolution was only fair. If you need to distinguish objects at any distance you would be wise to buy a more expensive camera but for run-of-the-mill around your home it would be adequate. When you search for the app you'll find four different apps to run this camera. You really only need one of the apps. The camera is enclosed in a case that is rather difficult to attach and detach from the iPhone. Part of my case broke when I attempted to detach the camera from the phone, breaking at it's weakest point next to the volume control. As might be expected the IR camera gobbles up your battery, even when it is attached to the power cord. Because of the construction of the camera case you cannot plug your earphones into the mini plug, So reportedly an extension is provided so you can attach an earphone. When my camera arrived, this extension piece was missing. Amazon advised they could not replace it and gave me a discount for the camera. One of my biggest problems was when I attached my power cord to my computer via USB, it did not work. In order for it to work you had to remove the camera case and attach the USB cable without the IR camera case. Considering the price of FLIR cameras, this camera is reasonably priced for general around the home use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Infrared thermal imaging now affordable!

This a really good and inexpensive device with a multitude of uses.
I have used it for fault finding in heating circuits, locating pipes and on electric motors. Great too for identifying cold bridging in building fabric.
At a fraction of the cost of the professional models I have used, it gives great results. Recent firmware upgrade allows charging of Iphone whilst plugged in to mini USB.
Only minor gripe is that it doesn't have the apple lightning connector socket on the base.
Fantastic tool is now affordable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-Wärmebildkamera mit kleinen Verbesserungspotenzialen
Reviewed in Germany on March 3, 2015
Deshalb volle 5 Sterne !!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars fab and easy to use
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2015
wow this super cool! A bit of work with a dremmel removes some plastic and the camera will fit an iphone 6, the case of course will only fit an iphone 5 but you don't need the case to use the camera. Its super sensitive showing very small temperature differences and scaling the image colours to suit what is on screen at the time. You can fix the colour scales so it doesn't re-scale when you move about if you need to. resolution isn't super high, but as it overlays an image with a normal camera on the thermal image you can easily see what is what. love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Für Thermographiedummies und Profis die eine Übersichtsaufnahmemöglichkeit immer dabei haben wollen.
Reviewed in Germany on February 28, 2015
