Pros:
Cheap
Doesn't Leak (There is a plug that you can open and close with your teeth)
Comfortable and easy to tighten, loosen straps
Sturdy
Cons:
Very little storage space for items other than water
Hard to fill up completely
Suggestions:
Like I said, remember the plug and you won't wet yourself!
When I first tried it on, it leaked. I found out that I had to tighten the connection between the
hydration cord and the bladder. Then it was fine.
Having used this several times:
Pros
1. Works fine after putting it full in the freezer overnight - it says on the water bag not to expose it to extreme temperatures, but after several freeze/thaw cycles, it doesn't appear to be leaking, torn, etc.
2. Has a lightweight webbed breathable fabric so that it's not sticky or uncomfortable on hot days.
3. Comfortable to wear as the straps are sufficiently padded/have breathable fabric.
4. Works pretty much as I expected
Cons - nothing major here but, given this is the only one I've owned, I'll jot down observations:
1. Not particularly easy to remove the inner water bag, which has the drinking tube attached, from the cloth carrying backpack: threading the drinking requires some effort to get the insulated tube threaded back into the backpack. Better to just leave the water bag in the backpack and freeze it/clean it without removing it.
2. There's no breather valve - so you have to relieve any vacuum in the water bag by opening the bite valve and allowing the pressure to equalize.
3. Trying to fill it is a bit sloppy - just hard to fill it up all the way and get the cap back on without water slopping out. It's a screw on cap, so juggle filled water bag with one hand while trying to screw 3 inch cap on with the other: water spills ensue.
4. Bite valve does leak a little - nothing that bothered me too much.
5. Securing the drinking tube from flopping around sometimes works - there are elastic loops on both straps just in front of the shoulders - you can thread the drinking tube through both, or perhaps double it back through one strap, but it doesn't always stay put.
Instead of doing an all around review, I want to address some of the "faults" other reviewers have mentioned. I want to do this, because it seems as though people are reviewing without taking the time to acquaint themselves with the pack.
Unfortunately the straps you have are the straps you get. As for a place to put the mouthpiece when running or hiking, it slips nicely into the elastic loop on the opposite shoulder strap. This should be a no-brainer, but it's apparently it's easy to miss. I don't even know if it's the proper place to put the mouthpiece, but it works for me when running, hiking, cycling, and climbing.
Other users say they cannot fill the whole pack. I cry folly! If I'm home I take the time to fill my 2L pitcher - From there I fill the pack. It holds a full two liters without a problem. This does disappoint when you're on the road or trail and cannot use a pitcher OR the water source doesn't allow for angling the bag.
This pack is one of the best. I also have a larger pack for the longer trips, also made by High Sierra - and I have no complaints. If you're looking for something small, easy to use, yet still holds a good amount of water... This is a great pick.
Update: The mailed me a new mouthpiece and the new one worked. Has worked fine for years.
