I purchased this item to renew a prior subscription that had expired. Program did not install correctly and it took me days to try to get a customer service rep. on phone after they didn't respond to my e-mail. They say that they have 24 hr phone support but when I called at 1:30am, hoping not to be placed on permanent hold, they were closed. I serious question how quickly they would respond to a report of a stolen computer. Would not buy again.

PROS:
Great tool that cannot be deleted from Mac (unless the computer is totally wiped)
Easy to use

CONS:
Sometimes location is delayed on website
To make sure it's working, must have internet access
Can be removed on PCs by flashing, or resetting HD.

CONCLUSION:
A useful product, at a solid price point, but not a perfect and infallible solution to computer safety.

So after your year subscription is over it is easier to renew your subscription through the company (usually $30+) than it is to buy a new much less expensive new install from here.

i learned the hard way... it was a pain.

I bought this after reading in the newspaper about a local woman whose home was burglarized. They caught the guy because she had this software on her laptop. I went straight to Amazon.

When your laptop is stolen, you call the company and they work with law enforcement to track down the laptop, which is sending them its gps location via email. Yes, the new "owner" has to get on the internet, but they will get on the internet. I was a little dissapointed to see that I won't be getting the location myself. But I guess they don't want to encourage vigilantism.

The software somehow works even if they re-format your computer. This stuff is ingenius. I love the idea of a laptop thief broadcasting his location.

I have no doubt that LoJack for Laptops is effective... if your computer actually gets stolen. But the software also issues false positives to your machine on occasion, sometimes system-wide. If this happens, you are locked out of your own laptop... and the LoJack customer support is difficult to get in touch with, keeps you in hold for hours at a time, and if you finally DO get in touch with someone, they "escalate" and promise to "call you back tomorrow." Meanwhile, until they decide to actually fix your problem, you have a bricked laptop. Hope you don't need it for work!

Note that this bricking happens WHETHER OR NOT you are an active customer. Even if you deactivate the software, the LoJack software can STILL brick your computer until LoJack decides to get off their butts and make it work again. If you've bought a computer secondhand with LoJack, and the software decides suddenly that you're a thief, guess what? You're not the old account holder, so your laptop is now useless and customer service does not work with you. The only possible way to escape LoJack is to completely remove all traces of the software from your BIOS, which I recommend everyone do. This is bad, bad software.

After failing to log into my account because I couldn't remember the password, I sent two requests to Absolute for a password reminder. I waited 24 hours and no response. I then tried calling their help line, which I did during their hours of business, the recording told me that they were closed. So far I'm not impressed with the customer support. As for how the product works, I'm thankful that I've not lost my laptop and i hope that I never do.

This product installed on my laptop with no problem and quickly showed a location within 10 miles of where I was using the laptop. I didn't try customer service so I can't say if they answer and I haven't had my laptop stolen so i can't say if this company can recover it. I wondered whether this DVD from low price source OOElectronics would have a valid registration code and it did.
