-Improved physics engine-Gang tackles for instance actually happen this time. However, you still have some goofy things happen like guys falling down after the play for no reason, but no big deal.
-Improved controls-The passing in particular has been vastly improved. I doesn't feel as "arcadish" like it did in the past. Running controls are good too. It feels more realistic to me.
-Improved presentation-The "CBS" presentation with Jim Nance and Phil Simms is an upgrade from the old team. They actually have real conversations about the game and they don't annoy the crap out of you like Cris Collinsworth used to. There are times however when they do get a bit repetitive, but overall I'm pleased with the change.
-Improved player models-They look more like the real thing in the game this time, even with the helmets on, you can tell it's them.
-Introduction of Connected Career Mode-This basically combines the offline Franchise mode and online play. I like the concept and now that I'm a couple of games into the season, I think it makes things much easier. You can have a career as either a player or a coach. Playing as a coach is just like the Franchise mode of old, with a couple of omissions which I mention below. Bottom line-I'm loving it.
Now to a few things I did not like:
-You cannot play custom rosters in Connected Career mode-You can still create a player and add to a roster or make trades/cuts and save the roster, however you can only play with these modified rosters in Quick Play mode which means only in single one off games. This is a disappointment, however overall I think more was gained in the Connected Career mode than lost.
-No fantasy draft-This is a minor disappointment. Usually I don't use this feature, but I know that a lot of people are highly upset at the fact that this feature is missing. I'm not one of them though.
-You cannot use custom playbooks in Connected Career mode-Again, you can use them in Quick Play mode though.
Overall, I really like the changes here. I have seen a lot of people that are really upset at the omissions in this game. This seems to be the continuing saga with the Madden series. People love to bash them for only providing a "roster update" each year, but now that they have created something different and they tried to do something outside the box (Connected Career mode for instance) people get bent out of shape for it.
My conclusion is that there are just some people that won't be happy with Madden no matter what. I tip my cap to EA for daring to think outside the box and provide an enjoyable football experience. For the first time in years, I actually don't want to put the controller down when I play a Madden game. As an huge NFL fan, that is a great feeling.
Now here comes the negative comments....
Pros:
The Infinity Engine: As many of you know, a new physics engine has been brought to Madden. It makes the game feel real, and you definatly won't be seeing the same tackle animation twice.
Connected Careers: Connected Careers is the brand new mode that lets you play as a coach or player in an offline or online combination of franchise and superstar mode. Here you can either use a past or current NFL player, or create your own to play through 30 seasons on football in the NFL.
Commentators: This year, new commentators have also been introduced to the game. In my opinion, Phil Simms and Jim Nantz are much better than the original duo of Chris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond. You will still be hearing the same lines over and over, but their commentating feels much more exciting.
There has also been other small improvements like the new Nike uniforms, and presentation changes, which really keeps the game realistic.
Cons:
No Fantasy Draft, not a big deal for me, as I don't use the feature anyways, but might keep some people away from buying it
No offline multiplayer Connected Careers, again does not apply to me as I only play online franchise.
Sometimes, the new physics engine does glitch, as after plays, players trip over others which makes the game not as realistic.
Because Franchise and Superstar mode are being formed into connected careers, they have been ousted from the game.
Any other Cons would be nit picking, but there are a few small quirks here and there that should be fixed in future patches.
Overall I would give the game 9/10 as this is a promising fresh start for the Madden series. Hopefully, Madden 14 is going to get better and improve on all the issues in this years game.
As far as no franchise mode, it is about time that Madden took the impetus to stop just remaking over and over the same old thing. It gets old. Time to move on to bigger and better things.
