I have played almost all of the LEGOS video games and was surprised to find that this one is one of my favorites -- up there with The Hobbit. The initial story is fun and I like that there are lots of chases and puzzles to do that are part of the story in between the chapters. Once you fish the initial story you have only completed 15-20% of the game. There are TONS of puzzles, chases, races, treasure hunts, etc. to do in addition to going back in to the chapters to complete them in free play. The world is a lot of fun to explore. It is based on the San Francisco Bay Area (my home years ago), and has many districts each with its own character: Downtown, Chinatown, Little Italy, Beachy hotel area, Airport, Museums, residential area (with Lombard Street!), and a camping/mining area along the mountainous coastline. This city offers much more variety than the endless, repetitive street grid oof NYC in the Avenger games.
I like the way that the characters are organized, They are grouped into seven categories (police, criminal, miner, astronaut, farmer, fireman, construction worker, and resident), and all characters within the category share the same ability (shooting a laser, spraying water, flying, electricity repair, etc.). This makes it much easier to switch to the correct character for the task at hand than how it is usually done in these games where you have a panel of 100 or so characters and you have to click through and try to remember who does what.
When the story ended, I could not figure out how to buy characters, red bricks, etc. It was explained early on, but I had forgotten and had to go to an online forum for the answer (go to the police station basement!)
Recommendation: Hop on a bus as a passenger. It will take you all over the city and give you an opportunity to just look at all of the detail and enjoy the humor. When you are busy driving or running around from puzzle to puzzle it is easy to miss a lot.
A couple of complaints:
1) The wait/load time at the beginning and end of each chapter, and when you enter and exit the police station is soooooo long. The one for the police station was especially annoying since you want to visit there regularly to purchase characters, etc. Why is it necessary to have those long wait/load times just to enter and exit the police station?
2) I like a good challenge and I found that by the time I got to about 15% of the game, I had accumulated so many bricks that it was no longer a challenge to have the amount needed in order to complete super builds. Seeking super bricks was only necessary to complete the game but not to acquire enough bricks for the builds. The easiest solution would be to make the builds more expensive.
LEGOS please make more games like this!

I am a HUGE afol and enjoy playing the games quite a bit. I love the way this game allows you to play one character and really get into character with separate use of the gamepad as a "communicator" as well as a map and equip list etc. I love this game and am embarrassed to say that I have played until draining the entire controller battery multiple times. I have also spent entire nights chasing one little clue, and I love It! This game is a great way for adults who may not have tried a lego game yet to get their feet wet in a simple yet Hugely entertaining game. If you are a seasoned lego player then you will love all the free play, heck i drove a semi throught a shopping mall the other day, it it has a huge play area of multiple bad guys to infiltrate and lock up. If you watch careful at the megabuild sites, as your build is occurring it gives you the actual set numbers needed to build the contraption. So much fun and only 64.3% complete... come on controller charge faster...lol

This game is the best LEGO game ever made, and here's why. In most other LEGO games, you switch persons, and that's most of the gimmick. In Undercover, you play as Chase McCain, and as you progress thru the story mode, you'll unlock different disguises with different abilities. Those can be used in levels where you didn't have every disguise to unlock more collectibles. This game is loaded with collectibles too. There's an alien to capture in every district, cars to find and unlock, and money lines the streets. This game encompasses the best of every LEGO game to date, and for $20, it's a perfect value.

The good:
- Tons of collectibles
- High replayability
- Fun story mode
The bad:
- Some puzzles are to obvious
- Jumping controls are weak
- You can't die

The storyline and game concept is a lot of fun! It's quite entertaining as some of the scenes reference certain movies and the characters are quite humorous. The story finishes rather quickly but to complete the game, you'll also need to explore each area in the city to collect more bricks, characters, vehicles, etc which will take some time as the city is quite large and some of the tasks are not obvious.

This game is only for single player, and you have to use the gamepad to play. Also it needs to be played on the TV as the gamepad is used for other functions such as maps and routes. The load time is ridiculously long to get to start screen, loading your progress, entering a new area, starting a mission, etc. The games froze a few times while playing, but fortunately it saved my latest progress each time as it autosaved quite a bit when new items were collected.

If this is for a kid under 10 years, might be a good purchase. I have really enjoyed the combination of destroying Legos and puzzle solving of other lego games. This one has incessant chatting by the characters that is extremely annoying and stupid.

By far the best video game I've bought for my 5 year old. He just beat it tonight with only 18.6% completion. He finished it and yelled, "Free play!!!!" It really is so much fun. So many levels and puzzles, honestly he had to use a lot of critical thinking to figure out the order of what needed to be done in each level. Very little violence (Chase McCain just throws other Levi guys around, and the only gun is a paint gun), the language is a little saucy for my pre-k kid (they say "stupid" and "idiot"). And there are plenty of inside jokes for my husband and I to enjoy. I wish they would make another Lego City: Undercover game! This time with Frank Honey as the main character!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy on the Wii U opposed to the newer consoles.
Reviewed in Canada on December 11, 2017
I bought this for my 6 year old son to play. He can't yet read, so I was a bit concerned he would need help to play it. So far it has been pretty good. Occasionally there is a screen prompt he can't read, but they usually follow it up with a verbal hint that he can follow.

This game was actually "re-released" in 2017 for PS4, XBox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. That is where I first learned about it. It took me a while to realize this was the same game and not a sequel. The new game is about $70, and I thought that it would perhaps be a better game since it was newer. In retrospect, paying $50 less for this game is the right call. It is still in 1080p, and runs seamlessly on the Wii U. The best part is the game was actually designed for the Wii U controller. There are neat aspects of the game that require the controller. If you didn't have a Wii U, it wouldn't be as cool. Although I haven't played the 2017 version, I would safely say this is the best version.... particularly for kids.

The game can best be described as Grand Theft Auto for kids. It is a riot to play, and is relevant and appropriate for young kids. We are having a blast playing it. I'd say it is the best Lego game by TT to date (and we've played a lot of them). For $20, you are stupid NOT to buy this. (it dropped in price $10 theday before I bought it. Thanks Amazon!)

Edit:
It's been a few weeks (over Christmas) since I wrote this review. My son isn't playing it much anymore. It has a lot to do with me not handing over the controller. I have become completely obsessed with this game. It is awesome and compelling. Best game I've played in 5 years. It is like Grand Theft Auto without the continual harassment of the police whenever you "steal". Since you are the cop, you take what you want and joyride to your heart's content. There are fun little side assignments in the game that keep you completely fulfilled. Things like shooting pigs out of a cannon, or blowing up statues of your nemesis, or taking coffee breaks, or racing jet skis, or building roller coasters. I can't believe this game doesn't get more press. It is the best thing on the Wii U. We are probably 50 hours in and according to the save game screen we are only 24% of the way in. I simply can't get enough. Move over boy, daddy is playing.
