I like the way that the characters are organized, They are grouped into seven categories (police, criminal, miner, astronaut, farmer, fireman, construction worker, and resident), and all characters within the category share the same ability (shooting a laser, spraying water, flying, electricity repair, etc.). This makes it much easier to switch to the correct character for the task at hand than how it is usually done in these games where you have a panel of 100 or so characters and you have to click through and try to remember who does what.
When the story ended, I could not figure out how to buy characters, red bricks, etc. It was explained early on, but I had forgotten and had to go to an online forum for the answer (go to the police station basement!)
Recommendation: Hop on a bus as a passenger. It will take you all over the city and give you an opportunity to just look at all of the detail and enjoy the humor. When you are busy driving or running around from puzzle to puzzle it is easy to miss a lot.
A couple of complaints:
1) The wait/load time at the beginning and end of each chapter, and when you enter and exit the police station is soooooo long. The one for the police station was especially annoying since you want to visit there regularly to purchase characters, etc. Why is it necessary to have those long wait/load times just to enter and exit the police station?
2) I like a good challenge and I found that by the time I got to about 15% of the game, I had accumulated so many bricks that it was no longer a challenge to have the amount needed in order to complete super builds. Seeking super bricks was only necessary to complete the game but not to acquire enough bricks for the builds. The easiest solution would be to make the builds more expensive.
LEGOS please make more games like this!
The good:
- Tons of collectibles
- High replayability
- Fun story mode
The bad:
- Some puzzles are to obvious
- Jumping controls are weak
- You can't die
This game is only for single player, and you have to use the gamepad to play. Also it needs to be played on the TV as the gamepad is used for other functions such as maps and routes. The load time is ridiculously long to get to start screen, loading your progress, entering a new area, starting a mission, etc. The games froze a few times while playing, but fortunately it saved my latest progress each time as it autosaved quite a bit when new items were collected.

This game was actually "re-released" in 2017 for PS4, XBox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. That is where I first learned about it. It took me a while to realize this was the same game and not a sequel. The new game is about $70, and I thought that it would perhaps be a better game since it was newer. In retrospect, paying $50 less for this game is the right call. It is still in 1080p, and runs seamlessly on the Wii U. The best part is the game was actually designed for the Wii U controller. There are neat aspects of the game that require the controller. If you didn't have a Wii U, it wouldn't be as cool. Although I haven't played the 2017 version, I would safely say this is the best version.... particularly for kids.
The game can best be described as Grand Theft Auto for kids. It is a riot to play, and is relevant and appropriate for young kids. We are having a blast playing it. I'd say it is the best Lego game by TT to date (and we've played a lot of them). For $20, you are stupid NOT to buy this. (it dropped in price $10 theday before I bought it. Thanks Amazon!)
Edit:
It's been a few weeks (over Christmas) since I wrote this review. My son isn't playing it much anymore. It has a lot to do with me not handing over the controller. I have become completely obsessed with this game. It is awesome and compelling. Best game I've played in 5 years. It is like Grand Theft Auto without the continual harassment of the police whenever you "steal". Since you are the cop, you take what you want and joyride to your heart's content. There are fun little side assignments in the game that keep you completely fulfilled. Things like shooting pigs out of a cannon, or blowing up statues of your nemesis, or taking coffee breaks, or racing jet skis, or building roller coasters. I can't believe this game doesn't get more press. It is the best thing on the Wii U. We are probably 50 hours in and according to the save game screen we are only 24% of the way in. I simply can't get enough. Move over boy, daddy is playing.
