What gravitated me to purchase this book was Past Smith's words while being interviewed by her Pastor, T. D. Jakes, "I didn't think I was good enough..." When I heard those words my mouth dropped! I recently earned my masters degree, was graduated with honors and awarded an ethics in ministry award at graduation, yet still wondered if I was "good enough." I could hear a leading with instructions to launch a ministry but wondered (even though the Lord has graced me years of service in this area with miraculous results) I still wondered am I "good enough."
This book, "Second Chances..." is an important book due to the transparency of the author and the stories, testimonies, failures, and transformations chronicled. Pat Smith doesn't just pencil her own life story which is catapulting in and of itself, but also features a variety of women, from different sides of the track, ages, church and street backgrounds to share the impact of their second chances. What I got from this book is that second chances can be processed in months, years, and decades - it may not be in the next experience one has but each experience, if we watch and listen, reveals more heavenly wisdom that gets us to that place of "this is it!"
Thank you, Pat Smith, for writing this! I took notes, highlighted words, wrote in the margins, reflected and meditated on what God was saying to me out of this writing. After two years of going-back-and-forth with "my qualifications" (it's God who qualifies us) I launched a prayer ministry that focuses on teaching the prayer disciplines to all who desire. May this book does exactly what God intends and release many women from the fears and oppression of our own thoughts and consent to give God Glory as we reach our "Second Chances"!! Be Blessed!

From the Inside Flap
No matter what, even you can have a second chance.
For so many years, I was imprisoned with shame, regret, and disappointment. I realized through my journey that it wasn't only bad decisions I made that put me there; some things in life just happened to me. And all of this together prepared me for something greater.
Decisions in the past--both good and bad--can and will impact your life forever. Every touch point has a purpose. I have used those moments, through all my struggles, to become wiser, stronger, and closer to God. You, too, can use your moments to fuel your second chance.
Join my journey through this book and read about turning our trials into triumphs, our misery into ministry, and our passion into purpose. My prayer for every reader is that you can release any anger, hurt, pain, or disappointment you carry so that you can receive your second chance. When you do, you'll impact not only your life for good, but others' as well.

Let Go of the Past--Embrace Your Second Chance
God has a great plan for you. Sometimes it's difficult to see and hard to find when the only things in front of you are challenging circumstances, lost opportunities, or overwhelming obstacles. Many things in life just happen to you--you don't choose them. But God can turn even the things you have no control over into good, not only for you, but also for someone else.
For Pat Smith, former Miss Virginia, finalist for Miss USA, married to comedian Martin Lawrence in the early 1990s, and now married to NFL Football Hall of Fame member Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith, life may seem perfect on the outside, but it has been far from perfect behind the scenes.
With warmth and insight, Pat Smith shares the truths she and other women have learned on their own journeys from heartache to hope. She encourages and empowers you to recommit to the destiny God has for you in your faith, family, love, work, community, and ministry. She also shows how to let go of what's holding you back, reinvent yourself, and rediscover your purpose and joy. There is a second chance waiting for you--it's time to claim it!
"We are touched by Pat Smith's faithfulness to God's directives in her life and know that He will use her story to demonstrate to others His rock solid faithfulness to His children."--Janet and Tony Dorsett, former NFL player, member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Heisman Trophy winner
"Each time I am with Pat, I am overcome with awe and admiration. Her desire to change the lives of others is a true testimony to her profound courage and faith."--Robin McGraw, philanthropist, entrepreneur, television personality, and New York Times bestselling author
"My friend Pat Smith's new book, Second Chances, is an honest and moving account of her journey from loss to redemption. I encourage you to read this book, let it inspire you, and then allow God to replace your ashes with beauty and your sorrow with joy."--Victoria Osteen, co-pastor of Lakewood Church

Second Chances by Pat Smith
Second Chances: Finding Healing for Your Pain, Regaining Your Strength, Celebrating Your New Life by Pat Smith is like a GDO (Girls Day Out). While reading this book, I imagined myself listening to Pat tell me her stories friend to friend. The ability to write in this personable manner creates connection between the author and reader like nothing else. Pat describes her heartaches, doubts, and failures as well as her successes and joys to make a complete circle of life.Second Chances realistically includes the dramatic stories of several friends and acquaintances as she expresses God’s handy work for overcoming obstacles in life. She creates a safe haven where failure is okay and a used as a step stool to future successes. Pat Smith invites you saying, “Join my journey through this book and read about turning out trials into triumphs our misery into ministry, and our passion into purpose.” and adds, “My prayer for every reader is that you can release any anger, hurt, pain or disappointment you carry so that you can receive your second chance.” What a blessing to find a friend in Pat through this written word. As she shares scripture, one can say she helps you find a friend in God as well. This book is a great and easy read that will hardly let you put it down as it entangles you in the moment. Now that I am done reading it , I am excited about passing it on.I received a complimentary copy of this book through Bethany House.com for my honest opinion and review.

And thank you Pat for reminding us we can have them as long as we don't quite.
Keep your highlighter handy while reading this book. Between the take aways, power points, and power prompters, not only does this book offer encouragement, it encourages the reader to engage in their own journey and healing. Pat is a beautiful example of real strength both inner and outer.
I appreciate her vulnerability and willingness to share her story and the stories of others to provide hope and a renewed attitude.

The testimony was great but I wasn't that fond of the writing. And I didn't like how it went back and forth between her story and others. But I think the message was received and that is we all have the opportunity for a second chance.

I would recommend this book to every grieving woman. Pat just made me realize that I truly deserve a second chance not because of who or what I am but because of whose I am. I cried through the various experiences and literally asked God for my own second chance at living life to its fullest and be the torch for the weak to follow. Thank you Pat. I'll soon share my testimony of 'second chance' too.
