Works like a dream
Works like a dream, feels sturdy and seems to be durable. I used automotive grade adhesive tape and this to essentially build a 2nd SSD slot onto the back of my Surface Pro 3 and it did the job perfectly.

I was trying to find a good hard drive setup to edit 1080p HD video from. ProRes requires pretty high throughput, something normally only an internal SSD or a hella-expensive and super heavy RAID0 setup can provide. But this little device changes everything.

Plop down your $20 on this thing, pair it with a fast SSD (I recommend the SanDisk Extreme II SSD series, around $270 for the highest capacity), and bam. Super fast speed, equivalent of an internal SSD, and still large enough storage capacity for most of my shoots. Work on your project, then archive off to a traditional spinning disk. Wipe the SSD and start on your next gig. Super budget friendly when you start adding up the cost of external RAID0 setups which might only give you about half the speed.

Based on the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test utility, with the SanDisk Extreme II SSD, I'm getting 410MB/s write, and 420MB/s read. Totally satisfies all ProRes 10 Bit YUV 4:2:2 editing needs, probably will work with 4K as well, and even 10 Bit 4:4:4 and 12 Bit if you're not planning on editing 2K video anytime soon.

Yes, it is cheap plastic, so don't be rough with this thing. But I see that as a plus point as well. Flimsy plastic + lightweight SSD = won't bog me down as I'm traveling to my next shoot. Assuming I tucked it between some shirts or something.

For video editors looking for a cheap + mobile alternative to RAID arrays, or for anyone else needing extreme speeds out of an external hard drive, this is your ticket.

P.S. Be sure to get the model with UASP support. Both the FE2005 and FE2006 have it. I got the FE2006 model so that's what the speed tests above are based on.

Though I like the design and ease of use, WiFi was unusable with the FE2006 attached to my MacBook Pro. USB 3.0 interference with WiFi and Bluetooth is a known issue: see the 2012 Intel whitepaper titled "USB 3.0* Radio Frequency Interference on 2.4 GHz Devices." (Other google searches will bring up short articles that cite this one.) I'm not sure whether the cable or case (or both) were insufficiently shielded but I experienced very poor WiFi regardless of which direction I fully extended the cable from by MacBook Pro -- even forwards of the antenna located along the hinge -- and regardless of whether volumes on the drive were mounted. I.e. if attached, I had WiFi problems; if removed, I did not. The problems were most easily seen by running "ping -i 3 [...]" and watching the degrading times and time-outs only when the drive was attached.

I wrote to Inateck about 2 weeks ago but unless I missed a reply in my spam folder have not heard back. [See update below.]

Another issue: A number of times the drive was automatically ejected.

Update 24 August 2016: A representative at Inateck recently responded to this review (I think brought to her attention by a small edit). She offered to send me a replacement FE2006 enclosure which just arrived. I'm happy to report that WiFi is working just fine with the replacement enclosure: ping times did not change after plugging in the attachment and seem unaffected by placement. I also ran Xbench (v1.3) and saw *uncached* sequential times of 66 : 66: 26: 73 MB/sec for, respectively, 4K writes, 256K writes, 4K reads, 256K reads, respectively, and saw *uncached* random access times of 10 : 114 : 60 : 112 MB/sec for, respectively, the same sizes. These rates might be explained by that I used an old Western Digital Scorpio Blue drive (WD3200BEVT: SATA2, 8MB cache, 5400rpm). The Xbench rates I saw seem ~consistent with those reported in a review of the WD3200BEVT (-- Amzn removed the link).

Very pleased that the replacement drive seems not to interfere with wifi (don't know if the previous was defective w.r.t. shielding or if they changed the design, but probably the former since I saw no other complaints about wifi). The enclosure seem secure (snaps closed using a simple tab; will try to minimize long-term wear by pressing case top to release the tab prior to sliding open). I like the flexibility of being able to swap in/out the several old HD's I have to serve as backups. Finally, thanks to the rep at Inateck for her courtesy and responsiveness once this review was brought to her attention. Revising to "I like it" (4 stars).

Later that evening.... Ran on a Seagate hybrid drive (ST1000LM014) and saw rates (MB/sec): Sequential = {write4K=124, write256K=95, read4K=32, read256K=98} and Random = {write4K=5.8, write256K=90, read4K=0.6, read256K=32}. Hmm..., Sequential improved but Random rates are worse. Though I recall seeing sub-1.0 read4K times for this drive with a different USB 3.0 cable too...

I needed a SSD Enclosure for an upcoming trip to Thailand. I've had issues before where if a hard drive is shaken during transportation it would render it useless. I didn't want to take that risk with memories that would be invaluable. I had an SSD laying around so getting this makes perfect sense.

This is an all plastic construction, so don't expect insane rugged protection, that some other enclosures may offer, but it's good enough for what I'll be using it for. After all an SSD is practically indestructible.

This is a plug and play device, just hooked it up with the included cable and formatted the drive to work on both mac and pc.

The one slight problem I ran into was simply the foam sticky backs you can put in the case to make the SSD fit more snugly. The sticker backs are kinda hard to peel of, the trick is to squeeze the foam and peel from the corners, it'll make it a lot easier. Other than that, this is a great case and works pretty awesomely.
