Regarding SmartWare, some 2013 criticisms were valid then but are out of date now. And other criticisms misinterpret the purpose of SmartWare. WD continues to update SmartWare and the bugs in the 2013 version have been resolved. I use file/folder backup rather than category backup, which resolved the glitches I experienced back in 2013.
The main misunderstanding is about the purpose of SmartWare - which confused me at first. It's not two-way syncing, like some cloud storage (Google+ Drive is an example). SmartWare is designed to be a goof-proof backup. Anything backed up via SmartWare cannot be deleted from the backup drive. And you can delete files from your main drive without fear of also losing the backup (not so with Google+ Drive in full sync mode). SmartWare isn't two-way syncing, isn't network attached storage and isn't merely rewritable external storage. It's true backup, designed primarily to protect data.
The downside is that it's inflexible. If SmartWare fills up the backup drive with junk files, duplicates, etc., the only way to recover drive space is to start over. That's what I'm doing with my original Passport Ultra, by transferring data to another external drive, getting a second Passport Ultra, and recycling the first PU for a new round of backups.
Also, if you have Windows 7 or later, you're not locked into SmartWare. You can use the free Windows Backup included with the OS. It works fine, is very simple, and compacts files and folder structures into zip files in a familiar hierarchy. Or you can use Acronis - Western Digital provides a free version of Acronis for download. Or you can simply drag and drop files and bypass any backup utilities altogether. Just depends on your data needs. I'm a photographer and need true backup because it's more secure and runs well in the background or as scheduled.
I also bought a 3 TB My Cloud a couple of weeks ago for pseudo-NAS, and for the Red drive reliability. I'm considering a 4 TB My Book with the Green drives, but prefer the compact size and USB powered Passport Ultra. However SmartWare is painfully slow on My Cloud (transfer speed is about 1 GB per hour or slower). But it's fine on the Passport Ultra, even via USB 2.
I had seen these Passports for years, but there were always a lot of reviews that talked about failures. The Elements version hadn't gave me a single problem, so I come from the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" group. Then I saw these Passport Ultra's and there were enough positive reviews to make me buy one.
With this little hard drive, I'll be able to access anything I need for work as long as my laptop has a charge. Very nice, welcome me to the 21st century now.
I will further this by saying I did go in the hard drive's software and deselect the auto-backup and security functions. I don't like anything on my computer doing something without me telling it to. Seems those auto programs pick the worst times to start running. If you want to disable that part, it's very easy and takes all of maybe 5 seconds. The nice thing is you still leave the software on the hardware. You just disable it from running, so there's no long removal process or startup errors when the drive decides to look for its software. I had that problem with an old HP External I had. I had to remove its (HP) auto backup software, then every time I booted the computer, I would get an error.
I can tell you my experience with externals. I've had over 10, I try to use one per year, then store it. I really don't know how much brand name matters. I had one HP external that worked flawlessly, then had the one that had an error on every boot. I've had two WD MyBooks without problem. Three WD Elements without any problems, Two Seagate without problems. Two iOmega that died within the first 3 months of use, both of them died. And one Toshiba that worked well. This WD Passport is my first portable, USB powered external and so far it has worked perfectly. I'll try to review all the products I'm using to convert my home office into a less cluttered, neat office space with at least, a little less reliance on power supply.

PROS:
- 2 TB is a good size to store large quantities of data (including high resolution images) while travelling
- Fast transfer rates (typical for USB 3)
- Physical size is amazingly small for such a large storage capacity
- Weight is good for the capacity
- Good build quality, and seems durable and long-lasting (based on the fact I've had this for about a year now, have traveled extensively with it, and it's still working well)
- Powered through USB cable, so no need for a separate power supply, which is ideal for portability
- Has a small LED (beside the USB 3 port) to indicate the drive is being accessed
- Has small rubber feet at each corner to reduce slipping on surfaces and prevent scratching
CONS:
- Does not come with a carrying case or protective pouch
Both a pro and a con, the included USB 3 cable is very short (1.5 ft). This can be a bit annoying when using the drive, but can also be a good thing, since it allows for easier storage (see picture with cable in separately purchased case DURAGADGET Sturdy Solid Shock And Water Resistant Blue Case For Transcend Storejet M3, WD My Passport Ultra 2TB, Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1TB & Western Digital Elements Portable 2TB ).

the MP portable external HD came in a nice little package. It came in relatively quickly.
it came in with all the cables I need, and a little black pouch. It is even smaller than I anticipated which is a plus, for a portable device.
it is beautifully coloured, and in perfect condition.
Usage Review:
after using it for a few month, it still operates perfectly.
It is very quiet, and does not require external power.
in comparison to my old external hard drive(not to be named), which not needs external power, and is very loud, also trumps in transferring speed.
I used my external HD for pictures, music, and movies at times.
for a 1 TB device, it filled up quickly. In hind sight I should have purchased a large capacity device.
Overall Review:
the MP external HD is very pleasant to the eyes, small enough to be carried easily, and there are often sales or discounts on such units.
if you plan on using it for music and videos, I would recommend getting a larger one than the 1TB one I got. It tends to get filled up rather quickly.
It is extremely easy to use, just plug and go.
the transfer speed is very fast, and has held up over time.
