I have owned the Q2 before this and was impressed with the quality. A colleague of mine really like fit so I sold it to him so I could upgrade to the Q5. Well... I am equally impressed. There are a few new features and a bump in Lumens. It has gone from 300 to 500 and you do notice the difference.
Some talk about the issue of refocusing after 5-10 min of warm up - Yes, you need to do this but really... its not a big deal. One quick adjustment shortly after you turn it on. Many will be set up a bit early and can adjust this even before you are actually presenting anyway. If you are mounting up high or placing out of reach for home movie room it could be a pain but this is not designed for that. Its portable hence meant to be taken for travel.
Overall it is a great product and produces a nice large image. It is very quiet though has a little bump in noise when the fan kicks in. Still much quieter than the larger traditional projectors. It works seamlessly hooked up to my IPhone, IPad, Macbook Air, and Windows Surface. I use an HDMI cable (standard size HDMI on Q5 - adapter for device to plug in reg HDMI to device)
Keep in mind it is NOT a full scale professional projector. It is not everything the larger projectors are but will do a great job time after time for the core market it was intended. Traveling/Mobile professionals who need more than a computer screen yet not necessarily a full scale conf and projector set up, A beginner to mid level gamers/computer player, etc. Vivitek does a great job with this line of projectors. If the Q7 was this small I would purchase that as well.
This projector is listed as having a brightness of 500 lumens and you do indeed need a room where you can dim or turn off lights, close blinds, etc. in order to view the display well. Even in a dimly lit or darkened room, the display is fairly muted. It is definitely not as bright as a full sized, 3,000 lumen projector, however the trade off is its portability and HD quality. No one has complained about the image quality and I can live with using it in a darkened room (after all, even with 3,000 lumens, the previous projector I was using was still used in a dimmed/darkened room). Text is clear and readable, although really high resolution content can be difficult to read due to lack of brightness. In order to compensate for this, I have simply moved the projector further from the surface onto which I am projecting (typically a light colored wall). Viewing an MS Word Document on a 8' screen makes it pretty easy for everyone to read.
The buttons on this projector are touch-sensitive and pretty intuitive. Reading the manual online, I was able to easily figure out how to use them. It even comes with a tiny remote that I often use to change the source from the default USB to HDMI, because using the remote is easier than using the buttons to switch source. The focus button is a wheel on the side of the unit and it is quite stiff so I have to use my finger nail to get enough traction to turn it; I cannot use my finger/thumb to move it.
The unit is small enough that it takes up very little room in my laptop bag, however the 3' HDMI cable that comes with it is too short and I had to buy a longer cable. The power cord is a two-piece set with a heavy brick attached to it. Because it is so short, and has such a heavy brick, it cannot dangle off the conference table and I needed to buy an extension cord so the whole power cord can sit on the table. When I was first using this, I was stacking a few books or some small boxes under it to get it to project to eye level. Then I read a review where someone discovered that it does have a tripod mount. After some investigating, I found the tripod mount; it is hidden under a piece of red tape.
I purchased a very inexpensive portable tripod for this and now the projector easily displays content at eye level . The reason I deducted one star is because the tripod mount is offset rather than centered on the bottom of the projector, which means the whole unit wants to tilt to one side and I have to wedge something under the tripod mount to force it level. Additionally, the previously mentioned issue with the short HDMI cable and power cord also contributed to the loss of one star. Other than those three issues, this little gem works great and is earning its keep nicely.
To start with I had problems getting it to work with different computers. After a bit of playing I got my tablet working with its mini-vga output but I couldn't get a laptop hdmi to work. When I use the remote the problems went away. The remote's menu system is much simpler than the one on the computer screen and when you press the 'source' button it switches mode easily. I wasn't sure whether to give 4 stars based on my initial problems or 5 stars now I've figured it out. To me 5 stars means 'exceeds expectations for this type of product at this price' so it gets a 5

The only minor problem is that there is nothing to set the angle right (like screws for example), so we had to sort that out ourselves.
