I took the bottom cover off my MSI GE70 to clean it out(out of warranty, why not). I noticed that i had a mSATA slot on my motherboard. I looked around and could not for the love of god find any information confirming what card would be compatible with my system. I decided to go with the M500 120gb mainly cause it seemed to be the best value. Crucial's compatibility tool told me that this card would not be compatible with my system. I was a little scared at this point but decided to take the leap and purchased the card. Installing took less than a minute and using some free disk cloning software i was up and running in no time and the card is functioning as intended. My boot time has been reduced from a couple minutes to a couple seconds! I also put all the apps i use often on the card and the increase in their performance is very dramatic. A couple things to note, make sure to do the required research for using this with a HDD and make sure you understand how to copy/clone your old HDD before getting all gung ho and destroying your system.

I should have paid more attention when I purchased it. The smaller capacity SSDs are mSATA, and require an adapter if you're replacing a 2.5" SATA drive. I didn't notice this, and was understandably crestfallen when I opened the box, and realized the interface wasn't compatible with my hardware. It was another three days before I could install it, while I waited for an adapter. In hindsight, it was a bonehead mistake, but I'm sure I'm not the only one.

For anyone curious, I bought the Syba 2.5-Inch SATA to mSATA SSD (SD-ADA40077).

This device breathed life back in to my 2006 MacBook Pro. When the HDD failed, I thought about replacing it with an identical, larger capacity drive, for less money, but I'm glad I didn't. Most of my data is cloud stored, so 120GB is is already almost laughably too much space.

The 120GB comes in a no-frills package, complete with screws. Installation is straightforward, and I had no trouble with device recognition. So far, it has performed beautifully. Mileage may vary, between systems, but boot and application load times have been more than cut in half.

I haven't owned it very long, but I have absolutely no reason to complain. If, in a few months, this review doesn't say "Edit: died after XX months of use," I'll stand by my five stars.

If you're in the market for a consumer-grade SSD, in either mSATA or standard SATA, can't think of a reason to go with anything other than the Crucial M500 (unless you're looking at a small capacity drive, more on that in a moment). The benchmarks on these drives put them in the top of their class, and the price-per-gigabyte is about as good as it currently gets. Super fast read, super fast write (can't wait to get a second and put them in a raid0). My system boots in seconds, load times in games are a thing of the past.

A note on capacity. SSDs are made of an array of NAND flash chips. These chips have been manufactured at increasingly high densities, meaning more data capacity per chip. Bigger chips mean more capacity BUT, this comes at the expense of performance in the smaller capacities. The controller that links these chips together and performs all the read/write operations on them has a given number of channels with which it can communicate with flash chips, and these channels work in parallel. Think of it like how a 2 lane highway can be crowded and slow, but if you expand to 4 lanes, traffic starts flowing faster. Same idea here. But, since a given product line is generally manufactured all using the same chips and the same controller, that means the low capacity drives have fewer channels to work with. Your best option is the drive that fully populates the controller's available lanes, which means bigger is faster, all other things being equal. With this model, I wouldn't especially recommend anything below the 240GB. If you want a small drive with good performance, find an older, cheaper model that used smaller flash chips. You may be able to get something with same capacity, better performance, and a lower price point. In other words, SSDs are complicated, do your homework.

As mentioned by others and various reviews, this SSD does get hotter than other SSDs of the same type/size. Mine reaches around 67 °C on normal usage. Aside from this heat issue, which does not affect its functionality at all, the SSD is FAST as you'd expect it to be. I have installed it on my laptop (Sager NP8265/Clevo P150SM) as a boot disk and it does the job just right. I have not had any issues with installation or through usage so far and I'd expect it to last some good time.

I think if this SSD will be used on a desktop it should be just fine with any regular cooling system, but if it will be used in laptop you should be careful if the msata port is placed in a place with potential to heat up. In my case, I had two msata ports in my laptop so I had some freedom of choice, but otherwise I think I might have had issues with excessive temperatures because the other msata port is near the battery which gets hot by standard. Overall:

Pros:
-Price/gigabyte for an SSD
-Read/Write speeds

Cons:
-High Temperatures
