This router got here this morning. Setup took about 5 minutes, and has a really nice user interface. This router is quite large and has the NETGEAR logo lit up on the front. On the side, there is a USB 2.0 port, in addition to one on the back. Around the back: 4 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 WAN port. I hooked up an externally powered USB hub to the port on the back, and connected my external hard drive to the hub. The router indexes the drive for media, and makes it available automatically through DLNA or the NETGEAR Genie app. It works flawlessly. I tested multiple HD video files (1080p and 720p) and it doesn't buffer, stutter, or freeze. I did this on a DLNA blu-ray player, and through the NETGEAR Genie app. I have noticed that the range on the 5GHz band is not great. It will not penetrate very many walls, but has no issue going to the floor above and streaming videos. I desperately want to test the performance on an 802.11ac adapter, but there are none available yet. My first day with this router has really impressed me. I will update this if I find any real issues (besides the missing guest network, which will be fixed in a firmware update this month).
EDIT: After using this router with a bigger external hard drive, I have one complaint: it takes a long time to re-scan the drive after removing it and plugging it back in. So, I found a solution: don't unplug the drive. If you have access to a PC or Mac, the drive should show up on your network and allow you to read and write files. This way, you can upload and download files without removing the drive from your router. And other than that issue, it's still working incredibly well.
EDIT #2: Either this router corrupted my hard drive, or it just decided to fail. Now, it will sometimes scan the drive for media, or simply not do it at all. I've had to safely remove it from the router, and run Disk Utility on OS X to get it to work at all. Really intermittent issue, but a huge deal to me. It works fine with smaller drives, but apparently it can't handle a 500GB one. As for trying to upload my files from a Windows PC to the hard drive without plugging it into my computer, that doesn't work at all. I changed read/write permissions on the router settings page, and on my PC. I couldn't get it to work at all. Hopefully some of these issues are things NETGEAR will fix in the next firmware update; otherwise, I'll have to drop my rating to 3, or maybe even 2, stars. NETGEAR: This is a multimedia router! Make it work like one.
EDIT #3: Since the last firmware update (V1.0.2.14_1.0.23) the DLNA streaming has worked very well. I think my problem has been solved, and I'm really grateful that NETGEAR actually took time to resolve the issue. Now, my final issue is the speeds on the 5GHz band. They are really slow for me (comparing to the speeds on the 2.4GHz band), I have contacted NETGEAR about this, and hopefully they will do some internal tests and see if this is an actual issue, or just some bad hardware. Other than that, this is the best router I can find. I only wish that NETGEAR would extend the warranty beyond 1 year, maybe to at least 2 years. That way, I would feel secure if anything ever went wrong with it.
*Update* 07/20/13
Set-Up the router on August 22-Early September. Almost a whole year later (Roughly 310 days later) the router gave me a blinking light issue with the power button LED and nothing would fix the router nor could connect to internet [Basically a bricked device]. Looked up some online sources and through Amazon reviews and EVENTUALLY found the solution to bring back this baby to life. Issue reasoning is unknown but happens when the router short circuits and is suddenly powered off during activity or simple power outage in the home area. This results into a corrupt firmware and the router can't load up anything because the firmware (Lets say the routers brain) is dead in thought but alive in appearance. Solution fix is more on the complicated side but mainly because it requires a few strange steps for an average user. Took me roughly a few hours to understand how and why.
*Update* 09/27/13
69 days later after the first router fix, the power in the neighborhood went out again and my router once again was left with blinking LED. Quite frustrated as I was, I managed to look back at pictures I took back durring the first instance to have as reference and managed to get the router up and alive again in a matter of an hour due to complications I had forgotten about.
Since this could be a universal problem, I can provide basic fix steps.
1. With a working internet connection from a friend or anywhere possible, download two files you will need. The Netgear router's latest firmware (Found on website product page) & this program "tftpd64" for 64-bit pc or "tftpd32" for 32-Bit pc (Simply google that program name and should be the first URL. It's a zipped file so you will need to extract it. Gather these 2 downloads and bring it on a usb or storage device to the computer you will fix router with.
1.5 Plug an Ethernet cable in your failed Netgear [Lan port 1, 2, 3, or 4] and into your computer/laptop
2. Enable Telnet on Windows 7
Click Start
Control Panel
Programs And Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Check Telnet Client
Check Client TFTP
Hit OK
3. Configure the computer with a static IP address of 192.168.1.2 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Follow steps to do so:
1. From the Start button, select Control Panel > Network Connections.
2. Right click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
3. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
4. In the IP Configuration page, select the Use the following IP address check box and enter the IP address (192.168.1.2) and subnet mask (255.255.255.0).
4. Open the "tftpd64" program and allow access
5. Click "TFTP Client"
6. Server Interface Box should say 192.168.1.130 or along those lines
7. Host box, type 192.168.1.1
8. Click on box next to local file and navigate to router firmware file you downloaded in step one
9. Block size says default and click "Put"
10. Wait several minutes for the router to save the new firmware, then reboot the router.
The power LED will glow a steady green once the firmware is successfully installed.
11. Reset the router to factory default settings by using a paperclip or similar to hold in the Reset button on the back panel for 30 seconds.
12. Step 5 Redo but in this manner
1. From the Start button, select Control Panel > Network Connections.
2. Right click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
3. Set the computer to acquire a dynamic IP and selecting the Obtain an IP address automatically option
13. Step 2 will have to be undone by "Unchecking" the 2 clients
* From here on out, it will be as if you bought a new router so steps are universal at this point to setup but you can still proceed my way*
14. Plug Ethernet from your modem into the main Ethernet LAN port on router
15. Wait for the computer to detect connection (Additional information may be required for this connection bubble may pop up in windows 7 and click it)
16. Open a browser and log on to the router (192.168.1.1, userid : admin , password : password),
