I purchased this Acer about nine months ago and it has been used every single day since then. It is still working perfectly and has NEVER displayed any problems whatsoever - in short, it is really exceptionally good. I boots up in a few seconds, is virtually silent when running, doesn't overheat, and has even been dropped once without suffering any damage whatsoever.
I read the reviews from time to time, just to see what other people are saying about it, and am always amazed at the negative reviews - I wonder if they are talking about the same laptop, because quite frankly I have not had any of the problems that others seem to have experienced. I still believe, as I said earlier, that a lot of people really don't know how to use a computer.
The only issue I have come across is that if I try to play a video located on the original hard drive, which I use just for storage, using the player on the M.2 drive it does not play properly - I don't quite know why this should be the case, especially as a video on an external drive plugged into a USB port plays perfectly - in any case, the solution is simply to put the video on the M.2 drive where it will play perfectly.
So there you are - this laptop is the best value you will find for the price.
(Original review)
I received my laptop about five weeks ago and decided to wait a bit before reviewing it so that I could give an objective review based on usage rather than my initial impression, which was a wholehearted "Wow!" So, first off, so many other reviewers have gone into a great deal of detail about all the fine features of the laptop and I don't feel a need to repeat all that. What I will do is tell you about my personal experience of using this amazing machine. I should mention that I spent several weeks and countless hours researching a wide range of laptop brands and models until I finally narrowed my selection down to this one - and I'm not sorry.
I find the build quality quite exceptional for a laptop of this price. I love the faux-metal finish, it's really quite classy. Likewise the keyboard, which I find perfect. The speakers are such a big improvement on my old Toshiba speakers that quite frankly even if they were half as good they would still be excellent. I always connect to external speakers when watching videos, but could easily just use the built-in speakers at a push (during a power outage for example). I can't say much about the trackpad because I always use a mouse - it works, what else is there to say. The 1080 screen is a fantastic asset in such a low-priced laptop - when I started searching for a new laptop a full-HD screen was one of my priorities and honestly I expected to have to pay much more than this one cost. I was already a Windows 10 user so expected a long update process when I first booted up - actually it didn't take as long as I had expected, less than an hour if my memory serves me correctly.
I immediately ordered an extra 4gb of RAM (Ballistix Sport LT 4GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - BLS4G4S240FSD), which was very easy to install in the spare slot. I also added an M.2 solid state drive (Crucial MX300 275GB M.2 (2280) Internal Solid State Drive (CT275MX300SSD4) and used the free EaseUS Todo app to clone the hard drive to the M.2. I had already downloaded the apps that I normally use - I set the M.2 as the boot drive, Windows renamed the new drive as the C: and the old hard drive as the E: - didn't have to do anything - and I have to say that boot time is now just a few seconds - the difference is quite amazing. I knew it would be fast because I had previously replaced the hard drive on my old laptop with an SSD, but the M.2 seems to be even faster if that's possible. It seems that some laptops come with the standoff screw for the M.2, and some without - mine had the screw - lucky me! I have left all my apps and Windows 10 on the original drive but use the drive only for storage - a "just in case" measure really.
The laptop is almost silent when running - and it doesn't generate much heat - the outflow from the side vent is negligible and almost cool. Likewise, the charger does not heat up too much and is much smaller and lighter than other chargers I've used. I was initially a little concerned about what happens if the battery fails because it is not removable like most batteries but decided not to worry about something that might not happen for years. As it is, battery life is exceptional - well, I'm comparing it to the 2 hours or so that my old laptop gives - I'd say that this one lasts realistically about 7 or 8 hours, depending on usage - I mostly keep it plugged in but whenever I do use it unplugged it discharges very slowly.
I have tried to find some negative points about the laptop - but the only thing I can think of is that there's no light on the caps lock key - a really minor detail indeed, more than compensated for by the backlit keyboard, which is a novelty for me.
These days I mainly use a laptop to go online, email, and for watching movies and TV shows. BTW, I use a VPN, which connects immediately after booting up - and the wireless connects instantly to my wireless modem and has never disconnected - some reviewers say that the wireless constantly drops the connection - this I don't understand, maybe I'm just lucky. I am not a gamer - aside from an addiction to Mahjong! - so I can't comment on how this laptop handles games - look at others' comments about this.
So, that's about it - for anyone looking to buy a really decent laptop for as little as possible I'd say look no further than this one. The features it comes with are quite amazing for the price - only time will tell how it will hold up in the long run but I am very optimistic and look forward to a long and productive relationship with my lovely Acer. I should add that I have a lot of respect for my electronics and treat everything very gently - no banging around, dropping, or general rough treatment - my old Toshiba laptop is 7 years old and still chugging away, albeit with a few minor scars due to old age! And last but not least, after reading so many reviews I have come to the conclusion that a lot of people really don't know how to use a computer properly - it is a complex thing, likewise software and operating systems - and all should be used intelligently and carefully - I think that people have problems with computers because they don't know what they are doing. Anyway, that's my take on it - but my final word is, buy this one if you want to be amazed!
My old laptop was a Toshiba Satellite L755. Had a Intel I3 2nd generation processor, 4 GB DDR3 RAM and 500GB hard drive running Windows 7 Home. Bought it in 2011 and have had it since. However, some keys are beginning to fail and I felt it was time for something new. I researched MANY laptops from Dell, HP, Toshiba, and Asus on many sites including Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Fry’s, Newegg, eBay and of course, Amazon. I found at least two or three that came close to this one in features, but was almost double the price, if not more. I felt this was the way to go for me being on a budget but wanting something new and fresh at the same time.
Seeing the reviews from everyone in my research, I wanted to be prepared as best as possible, so I took advice from many reviewers and purchased an additional 4GB RAM before I bought the laptop. I used Honest’s advice and purchased the Ballistix 4GB seen here: Ballistix Sport LT 4GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) SODIMM 260-Pin - BLS4G4S240FSD (Gray) I also installed the RAM first before I initially started the computer and I’m glad I did. Plus it is extremely easy to do. All you need is a small Phillips head screwdriver for the back cover. Just be aware if you do go the route of the RAM install, there are clips that will hold the RAM in place once you install it. It was tricky at first, but I was able to install it without any problems. What’s nice is that it did recognize the RAM without issue.
The initial setup took about 15 minutes. With that and the Windows 10 update, it took a little over an hour overall before I was good to go. I had no speed issues and did not have to choose options during the update. I also had no problems connecting my external hard drive and my printer. The updates comes from both Windows and Acer Care Center. I noticed some drivers needed to be manually updated via the Device Manager, which was fine with me. I also downloaded some driver updates from the Acer site.
The outside of the laptop has a nice matte feel to it, which was different from my Toshiba which was more smooth. The laptop screen and covering is much thinner than the Toshiba so I know I’m going to have to be careful. Acer really loaded this one with ports galore: THREE USB ports (two 3.0s and one 2.0), HDMI, VGA, and USB-C even. My Toshiba also had three USBs, HDMI and VGA so it was nice to see consistency. Another thing I really like to see is it is a CD/DVD drive. Almost all of the other laptops I have come across in my research do NOT have one, which can be a problem for some people. I’m glad Acer kept the drive in here.
Like most people, I was really excited about the lighted up keyboard and it a really neat feature to have. You don’t see a lighted keyboard very often on laptops so well done on that front. The keyboard is easy to type on without issue. I also have the same issue with the number lock not on by default but it’s a minor nuisance that also occurred on my Toshiba.
The touchpad is a new feature on laptops these days and it is definitely one downfall. It does take some getting used to, especially coming from a mousepad with physical buttons. I did buy a portable wireless mouse as a backup should anything happen or I get sick of it. One minor note: The mousepad is definitely a fingerprint haven as within one day there’s a streak of smudges on it. I’m hopeful it won’t affect the functionality going forward, but I would suggest keeping some electronic wipes handy.
The sound off this laptop is where I’ve seen mixed reactions. Mine is also a mixed reaction. First of all, it is definitely loud and can fill a room with ease. However, the position of the speakers is underneath at the front of the laptop, so having it resting on a desk can make the sound hollow but when I lifted it in the air or have them hang off the desk, the sounds improves drastically. The Toshiba’s speakers are at the top of the keyboard, and those sounds really good. As for the sound, it’s actually not terrible. The TrueHarmony makes it sound better with a more clear effect. So in terms of the sound, it’s mixed and I feel really depends on what you’re doing, but I also think the decision to place the speakers underneath is questionable at best, especially when there is nothing above the keyboard here and probably could have fit without issue. I have it set on the HD Audio Manager with the Rock equalizer setting and the TrueHarmony on and it sounds good to me.
The resolution is top notch. Having full HD on a budget laptop is non-existent, plain and simple; every other laptop I researched in a similar price range only had 1366x778 or 1600x900, and the ones I did find that had full HD was another $200-300 at least. The viewing angles seem fine to me and I don’t have any complaints there. The picture is really crisp and clean. I like the blueshield effect and it can get pretty bright. I was able to go through the settings and makes it bright enough that I can still see everything on the screen. Plus it has adaptive brightness which adjusts the brightness automatically based on the light in the room. I like the HDMI option to watch programs on my TV which works out beautifully.
As for the battery life, after two weeks of trying it out, 12 hours does seem far fetched. You could probably get 8-10 hours of just sitting there and doing nothing. I was able to get four hours off the first charge with regular use. As time went on, the life was about 4-7 hours with regular use. There is a trick they suggest in the manual to get full life out of the battery: charge the battery to full before starting the computer and then run the computer plugged in until the setup is complete. Then run the computer on battery until depleted (I got it down to 2%) and then charge it again and it says to repeat two more times. I’ll have to see if this helps in any way.
The WiFi speed is really impressive. The MU-MIMO technology is certainly helpful here. I experienced slightly faster downloads than the Toshiba and even movies loaded quickly on YouTube and Netflix. I did notice an issue on battery that I read some others had: pages would not load when on battery power. I tried the “Low Power Saving” setting and it did not work well. I adjusted the battery settings to “Maximum Performance” and had no issues going forward. It didn’t wear the battery down any more, so I would suggest this option.
I know some people have been mentioning issues with the hard drive speed and startup times being slow. It’s a 1 TB hard drive so it’s not meant to be real fast. However, in the two weeks I’ve had the laptop, it’s only taken longer than 30 seconds once. I have no complaints on the speed here. There is the upgrade option to an SSD or m.2 drive, but I don’t feel it’s necessary in my case.
As for the OS, I enjoy it quite a bit. It’s pretty customizable and I like the separate programs like Netflix and The Weather Channel instead of going to the actual sites in a browser. Very cool indeed.
One issue I did run into was Microsoft Edge. The stability is questionable as the computer restarted on me more than once when I was simply viewing a page. I never had any issues with the Chrome browser, so I would suggest not to use Edge until it becomes more stable
All in all, for $350, it’s pretty stocked. You’re getting what you pay for and then some. Granted there are a few downfalls, but for regular use, I highly recommend it to anyone on a budget.

No backlight keyboard , Less battery capacity And not full hd screen
All the while the seller seemed to reason out that both the Models are the same.
Have returned the laptop.
