WORST tablet I ever owned. Period.
1 Star
WORST tablet I ever owned. Period.
The price of this tablet, design of it and functionality offered puts it in the range of "real" convertibles yet it contains several inexplicable compromises that in the end resulted in a dead tablet and me out of hefty sum.Question: why would you put Micro SD slot into the tablet, if locked Android prevents you from writing anything to it? Why would you put an SD slot into the base if locked Android won't let you write anything to it? And if you try to unlock Android, you void your warranty? Once again: if you want to use this tablet like a real notebook, you *have to* void your warranty! Clever marketing, right? When I took my tablet to Hawaii, it started flashing pink colors (I think, some connectivity issues with the display connector). On another occasion, it spot pretty huge circle stains in the middle from time to time.Touchscreen was hard to use and non-responsive at times. The power connector is easy to break, I think I broke it because tablet stopped charging. Also, base never had any battery in it and never charged. Also, when tablet was connected to the battery, it lost energy like a hog and could drain full battery in one hour. And did I mention it takes 9-10 hours to charge this tablet fully?DO NOT BUY IT! Remember: to use it fully you'd have to kill your warranty.

Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2014
Other reviews have covered tech and specs, this review is how it feels to use this transformer in November of 2014. There has been, by history, a problem with how the tablet attaches to the keyboard. Many reviewers around the Internet have loved this machine and found this connection problem to be the most notable flaw. The machine I got was manufactured in March of 2014 and I am thinking they have done some correcting work on this problem or I just got lucky. The connection is acceptable. If you wiggle the keyboard section with the tablet attached the tablet will wiggle a little bit- but ti certainly isn't an issue and doesn't cause a problem.

I wanted a 10 inch screen because I wanted a smaller unit with me to take anywhere. The obvious issue with a ten inch screen is that some applications, like Facebook, will seem cramped on this smaller screen as compared to how they present on larger screens. And while you can run multiple applications at once you are not going to be doing any split screen work on this tablet.

The keyboard feels cheap next to the tablet, which is of high quality with great finishing. Let's go with cheap feeling but functional. The buffed metallic surface of the unit resists fingerprints. If you are like me, though, you are going to get fingerprints all over the touch screen. Best to pack a glass cleaning cloth with you.

The screen quality, as other reviewers have noted, it is just stunning. This machine came out in 2013 and it still has one of the best screens around. Who knows, ASUS may come out with a new model any day- and having gotten a bargain price with a Black Friday deal and having this lovely screen- I won't be bothered in the least if they do. Watching a movie on Netflix or catching something on Hulu really gives this very high quality screen a chance to shine and makes the viewing very enjoyable.

I don't know why they put a single speaker on the back of the unit just about where you put your hand to hold the unit. Better with earphones.

There is a camera, front and rear facing, with this model. I don't have any intention of taking photographs with a tablet. My only concern with the camera is that it functions adequately for Skype for those long distance family get togethers. The camera is adequate for that job.

There are a lot of apps and games to choose from. The one I find surprising that I like is the Google voice command widget. It is pretty good at understanding what I want for simple searches. I leave it on the desktop and just tell it where I want to go and I get there without having to type in search terms in Google.

The weight and thickness are not like some of the super thin models that have come out this year. At around two and a half pounds it is not going to weigh me down and is certainly lighter on the pocketbook than some of the recent slimmer models.

This transformer certainly has "fun factor" going. There are lots of things you can do with it and it is responsive and lively. Using it- it almost seems like the tablet itself is kind of like an eager puppy that wants to play. It is colorful and speedy and has lots of options to play Android games and play with software and widgets. I feel more happy and playful using it than I do with my more staid Macbook Pro.

I had read that ASUS tech support was pretty bad repeatedly. So when I had to cal them (because I was experiencing a problem that was my fault) I found the tech support guy I spoke with to be friendly and helpful. The first thing he said was- "This is such a great little machine that I am sure you are going to want to take with you everywhere- so let's get it going so you will be able to do that!" Wow. Enthusiastic about the tablet, his job, and helping me- and very knowledgeable and kind. What more can we ask for in tech support? (By the way the number for ASUS tech support in the USA, 24 hours a day is 1 888 678 3688 )

The last thing I will mention is that the documentation and manual that comes with this transformer is pitiful. If you are not used to doing searches to find the documentation you need and checking out YouTube videos about the machine and this is your first tablet- I hope you have a tech savvy friend who will help you find your way.

I was searching for a replacement for my aging ASUS TF700T. All my devices are Android so it came down to 3: Sony Xpedia Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) and the ASUS TF701T. I eliminated the Sony due to the high number of complaints about its WIFI performance. The Samsung appears to be a fantastic tablet but one of my TVs is an older HD which does not support Miracast and the Samsung has no HDMI out. The TF701T was simply the last man standing.
Pros:
• The quality and build was rock solid.
• The screen is simply gorgeous. Definitely better than the iPad4. I haven’t compared it to the iPad Air.
• Touch screen is fast, accurate and responsive.
• It does ship with just Android 4.2.2 but the OTA update to 4.3 when smoothly. I have KitKat (4.4) on my Nexus 7 (2013) and there isn’t much difference.
• Battery life is very good (much better than my TF700) even with screen brightness turned way up.
• Charging time is pretty quick.
• WIFI performance is very good especially with 5 GHZ. My old 700 had only 2.4 GHZ and its range was somewhat limited. This is as good as or better than the Nexus 7.
• Netflix streams at HD with no stuttering or skips.
• AnTuTu benchmark right out of the box was quite good – over 33000. Results: “CPU: Good, Supports large apps and multitasking. RAM: excellent, 2D graphics: Good, 3D Graphics: Excellent, Fluently support large mobile games.”
• Micro SD storage. A great way to supplement the tablet’s internal storage. $22 for a Class 10 32GB card is dirt cheap. I also found that the fastest way to load video is to simply “Unmount” the card, place it into a card reader attached to my PC and then copy. Much quicker and pretty painless.

Cons:
• Proprietary charging cable. It doesn’t use a Micro-USB to USB cable and the included charging cable seems to be unique to the TF701. If you want to be able to charge in more than one place you’ll have to buy additional cables. On the positive side the proprietary cable may be why it charges so quickly.
• The single speaker is poorly place in the back so the sound is not too good. However, I use headphones when listening to media so it isn’t an issue. Stereo, front speakers would be a great enhancement – like the Galaxy Note 10.1.
• ASUS pre-loaded software, which due to the nature of the Android OS, eats up a lot of RAM. The Clean Master app sometimes reported over 70% of RAM used. In Settings I disabled the apps that I don’t use and that reduced RAM usage dramatically.

Other:
• Bezel. It is larger than some competitors but I found the size comfortable for my thumbs. I always use a case so I think it is much ado about nothing.
• Weight. It’s about 100g (3.8 oz.) more than the iPad Air or about 22% heavier. Keep in mind that the TF701 is a 16x9 tablet where the iPad Air is a 4x3. In other words the iPad Air is about 63 sq. inches and the TF701 is about 74 sq. inches.
• Camera. I don’t use the cameras on my tablets. Independent reviews do say that the TF701T’s cameras aren’t too good.
• Dock. I am holding off on this right now. The complaints about the dock are continuing and it seems hit or miss on the quality. I don’t feel like gambling $125. I have the dock for my TF700 and it has never had a problem. If I feel the need for a dock I’ll take the 700 out of mothballs at least until the 701 dock’s build quality is fixed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect replacement to a broken TF201.
Reviewed in Canada on February 11, 2014
An accident occurred with my older TF201 and I instantly thought about buying another ASUS tablet without any hesitation. Everything is improved and better, except for the battery life (it drains faster and heats the back of the device a bit, but nothing alarming) and the decreased pixel count on the cameras.

The resolution is just awesome! Everything is crisp, crystal clear and colorful! And i'm also found of the sound quality this one has over the older model. Executing any task also has been improved too. Everything is just faster!

Another great product from ASUS.

3.0 out of 5 stars which i loved, that had bricked itself
Reviewed in Canada on May 11, 2016
Bought this to replace my TF101, which i loved, that had bricked itself. This one however although faster keeps losing its connection to the key pad dock.
The locking device is very weak and releases at the slightest touch.
I managed to un brick the TF101 so this one now sits gathering dust. Very frustrating when using as a laptop and the key board disconnects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great useability and portability, with WiFi range only.
Reviewed in Canada on October 11, 2014
The tablet performs well, last a long time on a charge with the Asus power-saving function enabled. When combined with the dock, virtually becomes a laptop and I can do most of my work on it. The only thing lacking is 3/4G so that I can truly be portable. I had an iPad before this tablet, but wanted to get away from the Apple OS and didn't want another Windows device.
I like the Android OS, as it seems to build on the best of the other OS's, and I like that I can use most of the programs I use on my laptop, now on my tablet. Being limited to WiFi only is my only real disappointment. I knew that I wouldn't have 4G portability when I bought it, but thought that it wasn't that big a deal. I guess you really never know how much you appreciate something until it's gone.
Tablet manufacturers really need to get into the cellular data service like Apple has, or you are going to be left behind. For myself, I won't buy another tablet without 4G.
