Update: Cooler Master sent me a hot swap card after I filed a part request. Let's hope I don't have to have them send me the screws for it, too.
I don't know whether I got the short end of the stick, or if it's discontinued, but the case I received did not have the X-Dock hot-swap card included.
Onto the review. I just received this case today. While I haven't fully built my system yet, I have started drawing a layout and plan for it.
First things first: This case is extremely cramped in the bottom. Make sure to take your time when you are managing the wires down below. There's not much room for airflow, which will leave your drives susceptible to overheating if you're careless and don't install two 80mm fans in the bottom as intake.
Next, Cooler Master makes it incredibly easy to manage cables in this case, given the small amount of space you have to work with. There are a ton of tie down anchors so you can rout multiple cables through the same area without having to put them all through the same "hook". If you remove the front panel and replace the fans there (recommended), then you'll find a neat little extended hole next to the USB 3.0 ports through which you can rout the fan cables. Great little touch there, CM. Everything about this case seems well-thought-out for cable management in the confined space. Done well, the mess under the motherboard tray will be hidden and allow for a beautiful looking top zone.
The case looks better in person than the pictures would suggest. The light reflects off of the semi-matte finish beautifully.
As you can see, I gave this case 5 stars. Here are my reasons behind that.
Pros:
- Nearly-cubic shape. It allows you to emphasize the components on the top and hide all else, while making sure the graphics card(s) don't sag.
- Lots of cable management hooks and options. It allows builders to make the most of the limited space.
- Ease of drives. While 2.5" drives require some screws that don't seem to be included, that's not too much of a con. 5.25" bays are a fully toolless install. Nice.
- Handles. While the handles are plastic, the weight rests against the chassis itself by way of a metal bar sticking down. Good on CM for this.
- Sturdiness. Unlike aluminum cases I've had in the past, this steel chassis gives me confidence about its durability.
- Design. Not just the aesthetics, but the way the top and bottom are separated so you can have the most air flowing over the components that will get the hottest.
- Removable motherboard tray. This makes getting to the components in the bottom a snap.
- Rubber feet. This is great for putting the computer on a stand.
Cons:
- The bottom is super cramped. This case could have done well with an inch or so more height to allow for more room with which to work in the bottom. I would have also liked 120mm fans down bottom instead of 80mm ones.
- No dust filters. I would have liked Cooler Master to sell optional dust filters for this case. Tons of air is going to be flowing into and out of the case, so dust buildup will be quite the nuisance. Make sure to weigh the pressures toward positive pressure.
- Only one 2.5" drive mount. Should you have enough screws and thin enough power cables, you could actually fit 2x 2.5" drives on the included mount. Perfect for a pair of SSD's in RAID0. The problem is there's only one of these so there's a max of fitting 4x 2.5" drives in the case.
- No included 2.5" drive screws, from what I can tell. Why offer the option to mount them if you won't include the hardware?
- X-Dock hot swap bay not included. This isn't enough to dock a star since the X-Dock isn't of major importance to me.
Neutral:
- The case is a tad heavy, but that's to be expected from a fully steel chassis.
- It feels like there's not enough room to mount a Corsair H55i CPU cooler's radiator directly at the back with the hoses closest to the ground.
Final Thoughts: I can't find a better case for the price I paid: $87. This is insanely good value for the money since I get a compact case, a test bench, and a LAN box all in one. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. I'm honestly kicking myself for the fact that this is my first ever Cooler Master case purchase. The build quality is fantastic. Cooler Master has definitely solidified further case purchases from me in the future.
I have purchased and used a number of these Cooler Master HAF XB EVO cases. I have built and worked on computers for over 25 years. I have lost track of how many custom gaming computers I have built over the years.
I have used some of the best cases on the planet but this Cooler Master HAF XB EVO is my favorite for a number of reasons...
1. Built like a tank!
2. Incredible high air flow possibilities keeps my systems cool, cool, cool!
3. Super easy to work on!
4. Works well as a test bench!
5. Works well as a LAN box!
6. Lots of room on the inside [I hate cramped cases]!
7. PSU with it's heat is separated from your sensitive components!
8. Motherboard tray is removable for installation peace of mind and safety!
9. Allows for super tall air CPU coolers if you are in to that [I only use water cooled]!
10. It is the easiest and safest ATX computer case to carry [rugged handles that are impossible to break]!
I could go on an on, but I am out of time! Just buy one and find out for yourself!
Cons:
1. Possible destruction of components by liquid!
If you are gonna keep this baby on the ground and you drink coffee, tea, soda, etc. nearby, then you gotta put some type of shield on top of the case to avoid accidently spilling liquid through the large top vent which could lead to your curly hair becoming super straight! Most of these Cooler Master HAF XB EVO's I place under a desk or far away from people that would drink liquids above and nearby this case. If you insist upon drinking liquids nearby and above the case, simply install an horizontal shield over the top vent, leaving at least an inch under the shield for air flow.
2. Weight
If you are a total wimp with super skinny arms and no muscle, then this monster is not for you...especially if you plan on taking it to LAN parties! So either purchase a lightweight case or start working out at the gym!
3. Appearances
If you are drawn to and attracted to the super elegant, super delicate looking rigs then look elsewhere! This sucker is made more for soldiers and brutes!
Hope this helps!
Up, up, and away!

Top reviews from other countries
This is a well thought out case with excellent build quality. Even the shipping box carrying openings line up with the handles of the case inside so when I transported my PC in the original box I had something solid to grab onto.. It was easy to install components with lots of room to work with removable mobo tray and open design. It has a solid feel and the fit and finish is excellent.
Criticisms:
It is a big case and it could easily be 25mm to 40mm (1 to 1.5 inches) narrower without sacrificing usability because there is way more space beside the mobo tray than needed to route wires. This extra space serves no purpose I can think of other than for wires. Lian Li had a full size cube case that was quite a bit smaller.
It would be really nice if there was an optional flat top cover without a grill to reduce unnecessary height and to make it more suitable for putting things on. Not everyone needs to install a large liquid cooling radiator and the case is so well vented anyway the top grill is not. It is the same standard width as a home stereo equipment and I wanted to put my 5.1 receiver on top but can't because of the bulge.
Theres no filters for the front fans so dust is blown into the case.
