A Posthumous Gift of Blessing for Fans of Dan
I first heard Dan Fogelberg when I was in my early 20's and it was love at first listen and first sight. It was and still is a love affair that I'll never get over, especially given his untimely death 11 years ago. Hearing these recordings sent me back to that first time I heard him and the song was Nether Lands. I was so drawn into his music, that I returned the gift and drew his portrait. It hangs here in my home office. We all have our own intensely personal stories to tell about how Dan Fogelberg's music affected our lives, but suffice it to say this CD set brings back many a lovely memory and belongs in your collection of his music.

Mathew. I bought my CD when it was released in 2017, and just bought another one to send to my gf from 48 years ago in Ohio as we played together in a folk-rock band, including several DF songs in every performance, ca. 1975-76. I also saw Dan in concert 8-9 times over the years, and this album set list is almost identical to 2 or 3 of the times I saw him solo. I grew up 35 mi from Dan’s hometown of Peoria. If you are ever passing thru stop and visit the Dan Fogelberg Memorial Park along the river in Peoria. It’s a pilgrimage you won’t ever forget the rest of your life!

I also preordered this the minute it became available. I bought this album on digital download from iTunes as well, because I couldn't wait for the CD to be delivered. I was not disappointed at all. My wife and I saw Dan many times, about eight I think. Our first time together was when we were on our honeymoon, in Colorado, in June of 1977. I drove straight back from Canyon City, Colorado to Houston, my wife didn't drive at that time. We got back just in time to see him, and his backup band Fools Gold, in the Music Hall, in Houston. That was my second time, and my wife's first. I cannot tell you how much his music effected our lives. This album has all the songs we always wanted to hear live. It is an acoustic album that will bring back so many memories. I love all 26 songs. Some I've never heard, and one off the cuff song in response to a fan shouting out to him to "Play all night long." The sound is better than I expected. It is so nice to turn the lights down, sit back, and enjoy what we have loved now for over 40 years. It was so sad when he passed on my late father's birthday, and 5 days after mine. We had always thought we would grow old seeing him live again and again. This really brought tears to my eyes to relive this concert. Now we have a piece of his incredible talent to remember just how great of a musician, and story teller he was, and how much he is missed. It would be wonderful if his wife could find another gem or two, "Somewhere Along the Road". What a great job on this album. I think Dan would be very pleased.
Everyone must go to Dan's official website and just read Jean Fogelberg's story of how this album came to be, and the work of everyone involved. It was a real labor of love for everyone concerned. I for one want to thank his sound board engineer, John Logan, who taped the performance right through his board that night. Dan didn't want to be recorded, as he said he was nervous enough playing at Carnegie Hall where so many greats had before, and his parents were there in the audience as well. He didn't know he was being recorded. Most of all I want to thank Jean Fogelberg, who without her wonderful efforts, this album would never have come to be. It is an amazing story of her perseverance in getting this done right. It is so nice having this record of so many of his songs that pulled us into his remarkable talents. We will cherish it forever. Don't forget to sign the petition to get Dan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while you are on his website. He deserves to be inducted. Thanks again for this wonderful album, and "Let It Shine".

What a gift! Dan is in great voice and plays the acoustic guitar and piano like a virtuoso. The humorous banter between songs just adds to the whole experience.
This concert took place in 1979, so two years before his best album "The Innocent Age (TIA) " was released in 1981. Most of the songs therefore are Pre-"TIA". The one exception is "Same Old Lang Syne" which of course became one of his most identifiable hits. For fans, it's interesting because the audience doesn't react to the first few bars of the song because it hadn't been released yet so no-one knew it.
As excellent as his studio recordings are, many with full orchestration, I enjoy his stripped down SOLO versions just as much. Often live performances don't live up to the studio sound but not Dan, and definitely not here.
Every track is terrific, without exception, so no reason write about all of them.
Some of my favorite cuts are Side One: "Netherlands" (he opens with it); "Stars" (Great Lyrics, powerful vocal) and "Sketches" (Summer and Winter, the angst in his voice is heartbreaking)
From Side Two: The Chauvinist Song (Dan's tongue in cheek humor on full display); Same Old Lang Syne (I'm SIGHING just remembering my HS days); "Part of the Plan" ("Feelin so holy and humble; Next thing you know I'm all worried and weak feel myself starting to crumble" Hasn't everyone felt this way at some point in their life and isn't it comforting to believe it's all Part of the Plan.)
"There's a Place In the World for a Gambler" (A Dan favorite to play live. He get's the NY City crowd singing and they sound GREAT!)
The only blemish is a slight hiss in the opening track but that seems to go away immediately. Overall the audio production is fantastic!
If you love Dan this is like Christmas in May. If you never heard of him this is a great way to start!
Thanks again Dan for sharing a little piece of your incredible talent. Rest in peace

RIP Dan

This 2 CD set is absolutely fantastic! I am a huge 'Dan fan' and have been a devotee of his music since the 1970's. I have all of his albums and so I think I know a bit about the man and his music. This show highlights what a wonderful musician Dan was. Whether on guitar or piano he delivers a truly wonderful solo performance. There are so many exceptional moments on this recording, it's so hard to pick just one but if I had to cite one
song as my favourite it would be 'Same Old Lang Syne'. To hear Dan sing this BEFORE he had recorded it in the studio is to listen to it simply presented not longer after it had been composed. It's sparse, achingly heartfelt and extremely emotional. My only criticism of this CD is the absence of any information about how it came to be released. If anyone is interested in this then do an internet search with DAN FOGELBERG LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL. This should take you to the relevant page on the Dan Fogelberg website where (at the time of writing this) all the required information is available. I just wish that a condensed version had been included with this CD. This double album is destined to become one of my most played albums during the next few months. It's just great!
