    A bit difficult to understand how to set up. The "quickstart guide" offered is a single piece of paper with a file name, and a website. The page for the website no longer exists and redirects to the main support page. Looking up a start guide gives you a pdf of the same piece of paper. I had to google, and read on a tech forum, to find out that in order to troubleshoot not being able to access the files, you have to 'eject' the drive, power down your computer fully, remove all usb devices, then start it back up, and plug it and only it in.Then it was able to come up and I was able to run the installation program.A huge hassle, that could be easily forgiven if the quickstart guide actually told you anything.So far, despite the hassle of the start up, this product has been great. It runs quietly, though it has a slight vibration hum that you can feel if you put your hand on the table beside it. It's easy to ignore if you just angle it away from where you rest your hands and mouse. The security options are nice, and being able to auto unlock for my main laptop is a big bonus. Overall, I'm extremely pleased!

    Some points to note about this drive:
    1st - If you enable the encryption feature on this drive, for every computer you connect it to you will need Admin privileges to access the drive because the WD drive unlock software need Admin privileges to run & decrypt the drive.
    2nd - If the drive is encrypted you won't be able to use it on chrome OS/ your Chromebook because the WD drive unlock software is a windows program which again need Admin privileges to decrypt the drive.
    3rd - Half the drive is matte while the other half is gloss, the gloss part picks up finger prints fairly easy so if you don't like a messy looking drive this is not the one for you.
    4th - The software allow for you to set a trusted computer so you don't have to enter the password when you connect it, this do not always work, you sometimes have to go through the process of starting the WD drive unlock software and enter you password to unlock the drive when you connect it to a trusted computer.

    Despite these few things its a Good drive for the money, I bought the red drive which looks nice & the matching color cable is well built. The included software also allows for the led to be turned off & on. I brought the      AmazonBasics Hard Carrying Case for My Passport Essential  to carry my drive & it fits perfectly of course I have the 1-TB version which is slimmer than the high capacity drive but should fit them also. I have had no problems using this drive & would recommend this drive once you know what you are getting you self into with is drive. Some of the points I mention would not affect those who do not encrypt the drive.

    I have Sling TV and that streaming product definitely is working for me, however they do not have the capacity to record OTC, over the air t.v. channels, that's where this hard drive comes in. I also have Air TV receiver / amp and remote control. This hard drive was easy to set up, plug it into your Air TV USB port and directions pop on to the screen as to how to set it up. I am not sure it worked correctly the first time, but tried it again and it worked fine for me. You have to format before you begin using, but like I said, the prompts are on the screen . ** It says in the instructions that once formatted, it can only be used for this purpose, so no unplugging and plugging into other devices, I.e. Laptop...Great purchase price, working fine so far, easy set up , no complaints. I would recommend.. Also AirTV said they had used this drive on product evaluations they had performed.

    Sure, a lot of stuff is in the cloud, but there is a good chance the stuff you create is stuck on your computer's tender SSD or hard drive. This is a great backup disk for just about any modern computer. It's modestly priced. It's reasonably fast for something with a spinning platter in it. It holds lots of data. I use these as backup disks for my Mac. I erase them and set them up as HFS+ partitions with encryption enabled. I use them for complete copy backups using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy, and I use them with Time Machine. They are small, convenient, and having a backup gives me peace of mind.

    now this is not a SSD drive, so ya still need to be careful with these portable drives. A small drop or knock can break this and you will lose all your data. If your data is extreamly important spend the extra cash and get a SSD portable drive.
    If you just want something to store everyday stuff on and be able to take it with you, this is a well made great little drive. I always put my trust in WD products.
    Just keep in mind this does have little moving parts in it so if you drop it, it not WD fault ya lost all your data.

    This is disappointing. I had this drive as a photo backup. I would use it about once a year, if that. And it FAILED. Just gave up. I had an older Western Digital and it also failed! So I guess I can't trust WD anymore.

    I have a wayyyy older WD HDD and it still does great. Maybe WD stinks at SSD?

    I ordered the red variant of this hard drive.

    It's a solid hard drive. The read and write speeds are different, the casing is well made, and the color is pleasing. While the design isn't for everyone, I found it to be fine; it's nice to have something that stands out. In fact, if you are purchasing this as a back up hard drive, I'd recommend something that pops out. You don't want to be hunting for your back up when you need it, and the bright color reminds you that you should be backing everything up anyways.

    The second My Passport I purchased, but different model. I use this one for my job. Easy to use set up and is recognized immediately by my computer. Portable to share necessary reports and files with my boss, without loading either computer with files. As with any job, computers can have glitches and shut downs, and no important info would be lost. Love it, and I would get another of the same, perhaps larger, if ever needed!!
