Let's talk SIZE - 36mm vs 40mm - There's actually a noticeable difference

Let's talk SIZE - 36mm vs 40mm - There's actually a noticeable difference
** 36mm vs 40mm **I am mainly going to cover size in this review because that's what I debated over for too long. I am sensitive to size, watches that is. I don't have giant wrists. I have bought a lot of smart watches and the most common reason I return them is size. They tend to be huge! Hope this helps if you are debating the same.Based on my fear of giant smartwatches, I bought the 36mm. When I got it, I found it to be too SMALL! I have never had this experience with a smartwatch. The entire watch body fit within my wispy little wrist. The bezel is thin. It actually looked a bit on the feminine side to me.I went out that day and picked up the 40mm at a local retailer to compare. The 40mm was a better fit for me. Huh? I like a bigger watch?!? I also think the thicker bezel with the numbers on it gave it a more masculine look. However, don't get me wrong, in either format, this watch does not scream "dude." It's more of a gentle, fancy look.** GENERAL COMMENTS **I'll comment a little on issues unrelated to size. Overall, it's a beautiful watch. It is definitely the finest fitness watch out there. You would never look at it and think it's primary focus is fitness. Fantastic battery life of up to 7 days (I hear) and that was pretty evident given it dropped about 8% in one day for me. Did I mention that it's beautiful?Beauty comes with some flaws, though...The hands are a bit difficult to read in low light and the display is small. Unfortunately, the app is not as fine as the watch. There aren't a lot of options and you can't manipulate the data into many different views. Fitbit, Jawbone, Samsung and Google all have better apps. However, if you need a fitness watch that you can wear all day - from office to gym - this is the one to get and the app will suffice.** PICKING A SIZE **Back to size - I have posted some pictures including ones with my LG Watch Style and Samsung Gear S2. I picked those because I consider both of those to be the appropriate size for my wrist. I took some of the 36mm and 40mm on my wrist but they were misleading. It looked like they were about the same size. They are not.My wrists are thin so here is my unprecedented recommendation: If you want the version that looks less feminine, get the 40mm. It will work on small wrists. I can actually say you have two watches to choose from and the bigger one is fine!Hope this helps! Read the other reviews for the technical and usage details.(the photo with the 3 watches on their side shows the LG Watch Style on the left)

I came to this product from the activite pop, so I have some experience with Withing's and their activity tracker line. I have only had this product for 3 days, and these are my initial perceptions.

To clear up a few misconceptions I have seen about this product:
What this product is: a fitness tracker, with some more advanced fitness capabilities. This product is NOT a running watch, or intended to do split intervals and second accuracy for runner training, or be an advanced smart watch. It is intended to compete with fitbit, misfit, jawbone, garmin vivofit etc. This product is NOT intended to compete with apple watch, android ware, tomtom runner, garmin forerunner or polar smart sports watches.

My impressions coming from the activite pop:
- updated look, less "toy like" than the activite pop
- much lighter on the wrist
- the digital screen is not distracting, unless you are looking straight on and the light hits it just right. I glance at the screen more than anything
-the thickness is similar to the activite pop
-the dials are easier to read
-more accurate sleep tracking, the activite pop would tend to say i was sleeping for 5-10 minutes after I had gotten out of bed.
-the steps tracked seem to be lower. the same route I walk every day with the dog returns about 300 steps less than the activite pop would count.
product pros:
-battery life, the product looses 2-3% battery for every day use which is very good.
-the constant activity tracking mode is easy to start (hold the dial for 3 seconds) and gives me better insight for running, compared to the activite pop
-HR tracking is reasonably accurate.
-the constant HR tracking though the day is useful to know when you should get up from your desk to walk around, however it does not prompt you to do so.
-notifications light up and buzz, but are not distracting

product cons:
-since I had the activite pop associated to my withings account already, the steel HR setup process was supposed to automatically remove the activite pop and associate itself. setup failed twice, and the third time I manually removed the activite pop, and the steel HR setup went smoothly
-the charger can fall off in a stiff breeze, and takes me a few tries to attach to the back (even though there are magnets). it also doesn't come with a usb outlet charger, so you need to buy one, or charge from a computer. Thankfully you only have to deal with this for a few hours once a month. Which is better than fitbit needing to be charged every 36 hours.
-very limited notification options (phone, text, calendar). hopefully something that can be fixed with software updates
-the wrist band feels fragile

After my last review, the fogging issue became worse, almost to the point where I couldn't read the hands of the watch anymore. I contacted customer support again, and they instructed me to return the watch for a replacement. The return process was simple, and I had a new watch in a couple of days. However, the fogging began on the new watch almost immediately. I have basically stopped using this watch as it fogs up constantly now (I live in Florida, and the watch just can't handle going from a cool, dry, air conditioned interior to a warm, humid exterior without going opaque).

Another issue I found extremely annoying was trying to recharge the watch. I had to fidget for extended periods to get the charger to line up correctly and start the charging. It is a good thing that the battery does seem to last a long time because if I had to do this every couple of days, I would have given up a long time ago.

I really wanted to like this watch. I want a fitness tracker, but I also don't want it to look like a gadget. The watch is beautiful. Just wish it was better made.

***Edit to original review***
I have dropped the review down to three stars. Still like it, and 90% of the time I don't have any issues. However, I have noticed that the inside of the face fogs up when going from a colder environment to a warm one. Seeing that I live in Florida and we've had a mild winter, I didn't think this would be much of an issue, but it has happened several times. Fog dissipates after returning to the normal environment, but it does cloud up the face. I contacted Withings and they said this was nothing to be concerned with. That said, I have never had a watch that did this.

Received the 40mm version of this watch for Christmas. I previously used the Withings Go, so I was already familiar with the app, but wanted something that looked more professional to wear in the office. My thoughts after wearing this watch for the last month: I love it.

Pros: It is a very good looking watch. And I use the word "watch" purposefully - it looks like a watch, not a fitness tracker. The step counter seems to be spot on, and I have tested it while manually counting the steps, and it was always very close to my counts (and quite honestly, I think the watch was correct - I don't trust my concentration that much and find myself forgetting what number I was on as I was counting). Heart rate sensor seems to be good, and registers my heart rate even when the watch slips down on my arm (Withings recommends you wear it above the wrist bone). I never thought that I wanted a smart watch, but I do find it beneficial to be able to glance down at my watch to see what text message just came in and whether I should get the phone out to read the text (for example, news from my favorite hockey team) or if I can leave it in my pocket (e.g., my wife). Finally, the battery life estimates are pretty good - I've only had the watch on the charger once in the month that I've had it.

Cons: I'm not a huge fan of the band that comes with the watch. It is a rubbery band, and in the humidity of central FL, my wrist gets very sweaty under the band. But since this is a standard watch setup, the band would be easy to change and customize. The only other minor con is the activity recognition. My main two forms of exercise are walking (which it does an excellent job recognizing) and rowing on an indoor rower. The watch doesn't recognize rowing, and stores at as walking. Simple fix to go into the app and switch the activity from walking to rowing though.

All in all, I love the watch. I also have the Withings scale and thermometer, and I love how all these connect into the app to show a more thorough picture of your health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Withings Steel HR
Reviewed in Germany on June 30, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Montre/capteur HR Withings
Reviewed in France on June 2, 2017
