First and foremost, the ease of use is truly remarkable. From the moment I received it, I was impressed with how straightforward it was to set up and install on my vehicle's hitch. The included instructions were clear, and the whole process took just a few minutes. No complicated tools or extensive assembly required!
Loading and securing my bikes onto the rack is a breeze. The individual cradles and secure straps ensure that my bikes stay in place, preventing any wobbling or potential damage during transportation. I have peace of mind knowing that my precious bikes are safe and sound.
The tilting feature is a game-changer. It allows me to access the rear of my vehicle without removing the bikes or the rack itself. This convenience has saved me time and effort, especially during road trips when I need to access the trunk frequently.
The build quality of the YAKIMA DoubleDown 4 is top-notch. It feels sturdy and well-constructed, and I have no doubt that it will last for years to come. The finish also holds up well to the elements, maintaining its sleek appearance.
Speaking of capacity, accommodating four bikes is a real bonus. Whether I'm riding solo or with friends and family, this rack has space for everyone's bikes, making it a fantastic choice for group adventures.
In conclusion, the YAKIMA DoubleDown 4 Tilting Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack is a fantastic addition to any cyclist's gear. It's easy to use, sturdy, and offers excellent bike transportation capacity. The tilting feature adds extra convenience, and the build quality is outstanding. This bike rack is an absolute winner and deserves a solid 5-star rating without a doubt!
The Good: After 10 years and and some wear on the 1st one, I decided to by my wife another. It is built with the same sturdiness as the original and that is a rare thing these days. Easy to install (10 minutes), carries 3 bikes easily. Value pricing, less than $200.
The bad: It is sold as a 4 bike rack, that is generous and pushing it, but can can been done, just not easy.
The Ugly: Just the box it came in as it was damaged, but the rack inside was unharmed.
Platform bike racks are all the rage, but this hanger model lasted us 10 yrs, so this one should be good for another 10.
What I like:
First things first, I've got 2 adult bikes, 2 24" kids bike, and 1 16" bike on this thing. It takes me about 15 minutes to load it now. And I do have to get creative. What I LOVE about this rack is that the brackets and straps are infinitely adjustable and I've been able to get even the irritatingly small 16" on there solidly. Pedal placement is critically important putting on 5 bikes, so be patient, take a deep breath, and occupy the kids elsewhere while you work on it. But I can't imagine it's any different with any of these racks.
Second, it's solid. I installed a Draw Tite 2" Hitch (which incidentally I bought on Amazon as well) on my 2003 MPV at the same time I bought this, so it was a lot of new hardware carrying a lot of $$. I had a pit in my stomach the first trip we took to Tahoe from the Bay Area with this thing fully loaded. I looked in the mirror every time we went over a tiny bump, but there is very little play or bouncing. Several trips later, there hasn't been the slightest bit of play or tightening required.
What I don't like:
First, there are no rings/loops/cutouts to loop a bike lock through. Forgive me for not wanting to spend more $$ to buy a lock to put on the end of the arm. Yakima could have helped a lot by putting something on there to run a cable lock through.
Second, it sticks out very far from the hitch. I think this is to allow SUV's with a separate window from their trunk to open, but on our fixed window MPV it just means it scrapes the ground easily. I am considering cutting it down a few inches and boring a second hole, but something tells me that is ill advised.
Third, it's possible to swing it down fully loaded, but it's not recommended. Yakima tells you outright not to do it so it's not like they're misleading you or anything. I'd just like to be able to do it.
All in all, I'm very happy with the rack. I would have liked to have played around with more of them before buying, but I took a gamble and it was a good buy. The negatives keep it from getting a 5 star rating, but it does what it needs to do very solidly.

I don't mind doing all this for a 1-hour drive to a remote trailhead, but it is a lot of work for the 10-minute drive to our local trails. If I did a lot of short transfers, I would probably go with a tray-type carrier that is easier and faster to load.
