Ask yourself-
1. How far away will my cameras be from the area where my home wifi router is located? Do I have issues connected to my wifi in the same areas? (You won't know if the signal will reach until you try it, but you can guess based on your home wifi. Apartments, condos, shacks, small businesses, and single family homes in the suburbs on small lots should work. If it doesn't work, take some time to rearrange your devices and often it will work. If nothing works, you could try some extra tricks like putting in a $30 wifi access point upstairs for example, but ultimately you may have to return it, it's a risk you take.
2. Do I want to record somewhat continuously, or just when motion is detected? 95% of people will eventually get a hard drive. 5% of people wont get one and complain that the system sucks, because they don't want to admit they didn't realize it didn't come with one because they didn't read the full description. No you don't absolutely need one. But the cost of cloud service will cost more than the hard drive (very cheap now days). It doesn't come with a hard drive because different people need different drives, and some folks already have one sitting around. Personally I record continuously at night, and only motion during the day. The NVR will record over itself once it's full. How long will it store your footage? Depends one how much is recorded, the quality, and the size of the drive. 500GB is a good choice for most folks with 4 cameras recording parts of the day, but may not be enough if you record 24/7 on 4+ cameras and want to keep on drive for more than 4 days.
3. Do I want to catch licence plate numbers on cars? Not going to happen with this system or anything remotely similar. Plus your professional criminals are driving a stolen car anyway. But it will deter many of them if they can see the cameras.
4. Do I already own cameras that I want to connect to this one? You can only use ZMODO cameras with this NVR.
5. Am I installing cameras because I'm engaged in drug trafficking or other illicit home based business? If your name comes up in an investigation, and they look at your house, cameras will send a clear message to law enforcement: Raid Me.
6. Do I need more than 8 channels? If you ever decide you want more channels, you will have to buy a completely new system.
--My Ratings--
1. ZMODO App 5/5: lots of awesome features that other units ive owned don't have or don't work. Some reviews say it's garbage so they must have updated it. (I use an iPhone)
2. Installation: 4/5 it's not terribly difficult to install, but it will take a few hours to get everything set up. Hard drive is pretty easy to put in, but you will need a small screw driver.
3. Compatibility: 2/5 internal hard drive must be 2.5", wireless cameras must be ZMODO. NVR will only recognize cameras with ZMD protocol, which is proprietary.
4. NVR Interface and Software: 4/5 Its built for simplicity, anybody can figure it out. However it lacks some more advanced features for tech saavy.
5. NVR Design: 4/5 only one USB, so you can use a mouse... but if you want to add a keyboard or other device, you will need to plug in an adapter that will turn one USB port into 2+. Also wish it could connect to my Router wirelessly instead of ethernet cable. I may order a wifi extender and set it up as an access point. I think they run for about $30.
6. Wireless Signal to cameras: 4/5 I was initially concerned because the NVR doesn't have external antannaes. However, I have another unit by another manufacturer with antannaes, and this one actually performs better.
Picture quality: 4/5 it's about the same as other units I've had, maybe a little better. But for most people who have never owned a system like this, 720p video recorded on your iphone looks way better than 720p on a security system like this. So keep your expectations low on picture quality, it's just a thing... and if you buy it, don't like it and worry that the other systems that advertised 720p or 1080p quality looked a lot better, they all look like garbage. So install your cameras as close as you can to what you want to catch, and add more cameras at different angles.
Bottom line, the companies that charge money every month are a rip off. If you are a motivated do-it yourselfer, do your research, and expect the hickups that come with jobs like this, and this unit has the right features you need... you will absolutely love it.
Ps: harddrive must be 2.5" (laptop size) make sure it has a memory cache (like 128mb), and if you have the cash, go for solid state drive but make sure it's compatible first. Hard drives that run 24/7 recording video, without a cache, will eventually die and need to be replaced. One with a cache will last years longer, and a solid state drive should last you the life of the unit.
ABOUT THE UNIT: The design is nice- but they do have cords, so if you place them outdoors, hide the cord under edging or through the garage door (that's what we did) and you'll most likely need extension cords!!! STAPLE THE CORDS OR HIDE CORDS!
The visual on the recording beats my expectations. Colors are good and has real night vision. Pretty clear and easy to see faces. There is a slight break in real time viewing , where the video does move smooth but there is a slight 'click like' break in live viewing if there's a lot of movement. (when I playback video, it looks smooth)
My opinion:
For this price, it is worth the buy. But 2 things to consider.
#1 need wifi (internet) to work these cameras
#2 they do have cords connecting to device and into a plug. You may need extension cords. The cords are fairly long but not long enough to plug inside your home to set up cameras outside. Try not to use outdoor outlets to plug them in because someone can just unplug them. Also, if someone cuts the cord or unplugs the camera, it will stop recording but you can view the playback and see who cut it. You don't lose what has already been recorded. Also, if you unplug and disconnect the system, all videas are saved in the app.
We have not had an issue with storage. As a matter of fact I don't even see how you can delete the footage you want. My husband and I have a few minutes we would like to delete so our kids don't see it. But I just can't figure that part out. We changed the password to the app so they can not watch or alter the playback. But if they unplug the unit or camera IT STIPS RECORDING. THAT IS THE ONLY DOWN FALL (I WISH THEY WERE WIRELESS)
Extra info:
Once you set up the system... You can lable each camera. We put 2 inside in our window and it does record through the screen but at night, it doesn't pick up outside images unless the cameras are outside. Then it gets good video. You can also set up alerts on each camera. So, if the camera labelled "garage" gets movement between the hours you set up- it will notify you on your phone. And THE CAMERAS ARE ALWAYS RECORDING- WHEN IT DETECTS MOVEMENT. When you go to playback, you can view just the parts where movement was detected. That makes it so much easier to find specific sections. An example---->I wanted to see when my daughter's boyfriend left the house. Instead of having to go through the entire video, it shows you when movement was detected. You could then click on that section and watched the video.
Basically:
Once you download the app and set up the internet to connect-- you CAN WATCH LIVE OR WATCH PLAYBACK! If wifi / power goes out.. you can't watch live or playback. Set up is simple if you know the said and wifi password (on the back or side of your router/internet box) But if you do NOT have wifi/internet...it will not work!
Need to know:
Once you get the ZMode app & you're ready to set up the system, make sure all cameas are plugged in and THEY NEED TO BE CLOSE TO THE UNIT SO THEY CAN CONNECT. AFTER YOU GET THE NITICE THAT ALL DEVICES ARE CONNECTED, YOU CAN MIVE THEM TO THE PLACES YOU WANT THEM TO RECORS. They can be unplugged and moved ince connected. No need to go through set up again. There are YouTube videos on the set up, but they didn't work for us. I wish I could put up a video because it is easy once explained easily. You can ask me any questions you may have. I feel like I am an expert now. I set up ours, my mom's, and my neighbors. Each had a separate issue, but I figured it out.
Overall: good quality of product. Great picture quality! I would buy again and recommend. The price is very good. And Easy set up.
Downfalls: the cameras have cords :(
* I added a photo of video recording, the layout of the app (you just click the came you'd like to view and watch live or click the playback) I am not sure what the mic icon is for . When I press it , nothing happens. Maybe it's for an add on feature. Also, if you are having an emergency or being robbed...there is no one to notify you and no alarm. It just allows you to see what is or what did happen. And hopefully who did it.
